원초성을 기반으로 한 도자 조형 연구 : 점토의 물질성을 중심으로 = A Study on the Formative Ceramics based on Primitiveness : Focused on the Materiality of Clay

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 원초적 표현을 기반으로 점토를 다양하게 활용하여 표현한 도자 조형에 관한 것으로 전통적인 도예에서 추구하는 기술적인 완벽성에서 벗어나, 원초적인 표현을 이용해 제작과정을 새롭게 보는 것으로부터 시작되었다. 원초성은 존재의 근원으로 향하는 성질이며 본능을 추구하고 제작에서 자유로운 형식을 이끌어낸다. 연구자는 도예에서 원초적 표현을 표현방식으로 연결하여, 도자 조형 작품 제작과정에서 새로운 가능성을 도출하고자 한다.

연구는 원초성과 물질성에 관한 고찰, 선행 작가 분석, 실험 및 제작과정, 연구작품 분석으로 구성하였다. 원초성에 관한 고찰에서는 원초성의 개념을 고찰하고, 아르테 포베라 미술에서 원초적 표현을 사용한 사례들을 통해 원초적 표현은 물질성을 통해 나타나는 것을 확인하였다. 이에 물질성이 가지는 의미에 대해 알아보기 위해 가스통 바슐라르의 물질적 상상력 이론을 살펴보고, 앵포르멜 미술을 통해 물질의 다양한 표현 가능성을 고찰하였다.
또한, 선행 작가 분석을 바탕으로 현대 도예에서 제작에 원초적 표현과 의미에 대해 알아보았다. 작가들은 제작과정에서 숙련된 기술을 떠나 무경험의 상태로 돌아가 원초성에 기반을 둔 제작의 근원을 표현하고 있음을 알게 되었다. 이를 토대로 제작과정에서 생기는 고정된 관념에서 벗어나 일상의 물질을 이용한 실험에서 새로운 표현방식을 도출하고자 하였고, 이 과정에서 연구자의 내적 필연성에 따라 만들어지는 다양한 도자 조형을 통해 원초적 표현 방법의 확장 가능성을 볼 수 있었다.

본 연구에서의 원초성은 표현의 수단으로 물질을 이용했을 때 나타나는 요소이며, 연구 중 도자조형의 주매체로 사용되는 점토의 물질성을 활용하여 다양한 표현 방법을 시도해 보았다. 점토를 여러 방식으로 활용한 제작과정은 기존의 전통적인 방식에서 벗어날 수 있다. 연구자는 도자 조형 작업에서 사용한 실험적인 연구를 통해 다채로운 표현의 가능성을 확인할 수 있었다. 본 연구는 형식에서 벗어난 자유로운 작품이 앞으로 도자를 연구하는 사람들에게 하나의 가치로서 제시될 수 있기를 바란다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper focuses on the ceramic sculptures that are utilized and expressed variously based on primitiveness. The study began with a new view on the production process by becoming free from the technical perfection of traditional ceramics and realizing one’s limits of perspective. Primitiveness indicates a nature that traces back to the source of existence, pursues instinct and draws free form. The researcher intends to derive new possibilities from the production process of ceramic sculptures by connecting the concept of primitive expressions in ceramics with modes of expression.

The study is consisted of Theoretical Inquiry into the Primitiveness and Materiality; Analysis of Leading Artists; Experiment and Production Process; and Analysis of the Research Work. The Theoretical Inquiry explores the concept of primitiveness and analyzes how primitive expression emerges from materiality with the examples of the Arte Povera artworks. Looking into the concept of materiality, the study examines Gaston Bachelard’s ‘material imagination’ and the notion emphasized in Art Informel.
The Analysis of Leading Artists discusses the primitive expression and its definition with the case study of the leading artists who adopted the idea in modern ceramics. Away from skilled techniques, the artists expressed the state of non-experienced in the production process and the source of production on the basis of primitiveness. This study was thus executed during the production process to overcome stereotypes and to draw new modes of expression from the experiments on diverse materials irrelevant to ceramics. Through this process, the extensibility of methods of primitive expression was detected with various ceramic sculptures made from the researcher’s inner necessity.

In this paper, primitiveness represents an element as means of expression emerged when using materials. During the study, the researcher pursues various methods of expression, utilizing the materiality of clay. The production process becomes free from existing arrangement by applying clay in various methods. The researcher discovers the potential of varied expression through the experimental study conducted during the ceramic processing. The study wishes that artworks unconstrained from formalities would be an asset to those who study ceramics.
