Objectives: The relationship between malignant T-cell lymphoma and retroviral infection was examined in sixty-two cases of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma arising in nodal and extranodal sites to presume the etiologic factors in the pathogenesis of T-cell lymphoma in Korean.
Methods: Sixty-two cases of malignant lymphoma were examined with battery of monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies directed to T-cell, B-cell and macrophage-lineage to determine the immunophenotypes. Reverse transcriptase activity were examined by RNA-directed DNA polymerase assay on the 7 cases of T-cell malignant lymphoma, and the pol, env and tax gene region of the HTLV-Ⅰ were examined by polymerase chain reaction(PCR) on 17 cases of B-cell and 7 cases of T-cell malignant lymphoma. Immunohistochemical staining to the gag region(p19 and p21). env region(gp46) and px gene(NCC-PX-1G) of the HTLV-I on the 24 cases of the malignant B- and T-cell lymphoma were performed to elucidate the evidence of HTLV-I infection.
Results: There was no evidence of retroviral infection including HTLV-I in examined 7 cases of peripheral T-cell lymphomas and 17 cases of B cell lymphomas.
Conclusion: These results suggest that the evidence of retroviral infection as an etiological factor in the pathogenesis of T-cell lymphoma in Korean might be poor.
