Interaction with the endless vitality of nature may be the eternal motif for Eastern and Western art of painting alike.
It is true that forms of art, once dedicated to expression of the very noble and pure significances and values of humanity and nature, has transformed to keep pace with the diversity of contemporary art in the midst of sensational and dynamic change and adoption. However, we should not overlook that the true understanding of nature and humans has a significant implication in artistic presentation of all time.
In his book “What is Art”, Leo Tolstoy defines art as an artistic activity of evoking in oneself a feeling one has once experienced then by means of movements, lines, colors, sounds, or forms expressed in words, so to transmit that feeling that others experience the same feeling. Likewise, as seen in some works where figurative images and abstract sense create harmony, expressing natural emotion and vision that sympathize with nature lets people who partake of the work of art appreciate the rhythm of coexistence with nature. In the same sense, forms and beliefs expressed in my works are based on the values mentioned above.
I have been constantly directing my attention and studying the changes and emotional expression of nature, and I have applied various forms of expression in my works, including semi-figurative and abstract forms. My works initially starts from specific and realistic description of object, and gradually changes to lyrical abstraction and solid forms through colors, dimension, and multi-dimensional form. In that way, my work could be understood within the context of the lyrical abstraction found in Western Informel, and the art of using blank spaces in Eastern paintings.
To emphasize the reflective significance that arises from the very essence of nature—which can be accomplished by illustrating objects accurately but with simplified expressions or eliminating the outlines of the object in space by utilizing neutral colors―I explored the expressive method of incorporating modest coloration and upbeat strokes. Also recently, I aimed to establish a new form of expression, adding diversity and depth, by applying pointillism of Neo- impressionism.
In one aspect, to express feelings toward nature in further depth and with heartfelt sincerity, empathy was made possible by intensifying the multi-dimensional mode of expression above conventional forms and allowing for an intimate interaction with nature through the process of co-existence of abstraction and conception via matiere. Moreover, in hopes of returning to the concept of uniting myself with nature, I pursued a better understanding of Chuang-Tzu and Taoist philosophies and incorporated them into my works.
Therefore, upon reinterpreting the inherent emotionality of humanity and nature from my own perspective, it can be concluded that the focus was placed on the life of humanity and nature, transcending the differences between eastern and western concepts.
In this discussion, I intend to address the emotionality and vitality shown through the frames of my visual language built on philosophical backgrounds, different modes of expression, temporal changes, and the unique characteristics of various techniques.
