The splendid development of the Internet and digital media has driven a communication system making information interactive. This Information Age is likely to demand the integrative and introspective speculation rather than a traditional way of thinking. The storytelling method corresponds with the needs of this rapidly changing society. In fact, it is certain that this method should be accepted as prominent alternative in school education.
This research was to apply the storytelling teaching method to a Fine Arts class and to examine its results and effects. "Storytelling" is "Iyagi" literally in Korean. Above all, this storytelling method has recently been in the spotlight throughout cultural areas. Storytelling is a compound word which is made up of both "story" and "telling". The former word "story" is a general concept from an archetype of narrative, while the latter connotation, "telling", means the process of discourse to convey the story which can be an archetype of a certain narrative to other individuals. According to the results derived from the preceding study, it is true that the storytelling teaching methods used with other subjects are able to have educational effects. Three kinds of project models were embarked on. The first one was to create storybooks as a type of narrative storytelling. The second project was a Cartoon Project for a cartoon storytelling exercise. Finally, the last one was the discovery of famous Damyang historic figures and related pavilions as a way of historic storytelling. Those respective projects were arranged and divided so that students could expand a range of perspectives from their own understandings such as a neighborhood, regions and so forth. This study was intended for 2nd and 3rd graders of public middle schools throughout the Damyang area and was implemented based on cooperative group work. This project has been developed in conjunction with English, Korean and Social Science classes simultaneously. Each project has created a bulk of visual products. Korean, English and Social Science classes made fairy tale books, English version cartoons and Korean historic cartoons respectively. A short animation and creating historical characters during classes were also completed within those subjects.
The research found that the students' motivation, participation and satisfaction regarding the lessons were boosted while cooperating with each other throughout the projects. These cross-curricular projects helped peer teachers to communicate much efficiently. Furthermore, achievement was gained affected aspects which made the considerable impact on students' positive attitude toward others, development of their social abilities as well as helping them to find their own identity. The students became aware that it is possible to express ordinary life throughout art, which evidently is another excellent result of the program.
Four suggestions with respect to the storytelling teaching method applied here for instruction in a classroom setting are as follows:
First, this study reaffirmed that Korean educational system hindered students' potential motivation owing to other misleading academic cliques that may be presented.
Second, this study revealed that students also had difficulty managing the lack of communication in within society. The drive to search for something to depend on as well as to free themselves from isolation and frequently emptiness were founded in their work.
Third, the results showed that the school grade ranking system does not always have an impact with the creativity level of students.
Lastly, it was a hopeful and positive disposition. Cooperative Group work held a powerful push forward a mutual understanding within individuals each other. The students have built confidence while going through the process, to yield their opinions and to iron out the difficulties they encountered. This optimistic attribute worked for the teachers who involved within these projects. The cross-curricular projects make the effectiveness of lessons much more desirable.
Finally, this study served as a momentum to make sure that a Fine Arts is a very effective subject, not only for the application of a storytelling teaching method, but also for the integrative instruction with other subjects. In other words, culture and the arts are considered highly crucial and influential in our society and in education.
