RCM의 주요 특징은 교사 PCK를 cPCK(collective PCK; 집단적 PCK), pPCK(personal PCK; 개인적 PCK), ePCK(enacted PCK; 실행된 PCK)의 세 영역으로 구분하고 교사의 PCK가 영역 간 지식 교환(knowledge exchange)을 통해 발달한다고 설명한 것이다.

Since the concept of pedagogical content knowledge (PCK), which is a teacher's specialized knowledge and an integrated combination of content knowledge and pedagogical knowledge, was introduced to science education, various academic debates have arisen regarding PCK. The Refined Consensus Model (RCM) was developed at a PCK summit to address the divergent views surrounding PCK. The main feature of the RCM is that it categorizes teacher PCK into three realms: collective PCK (cPCK), personal PCK (pPCK), and enacted PCK (ePCK). The RCM also viewed a teacher's PCK as being developed through knowledge exchange between the three realms. Participation in instructional professional development projects, such as teacher learning communities (hereafter TLC), and teaching practice {including planning (ePCKP), teaching (ePCKT), and reflecting on (ePCKR) the lessons} can lead to knowledge exchange between the three realms of a teacher's PCK, which expands the teacher's pPCK and ultimately develops the teacher's PCK. On the other hand, There is a recent trend in science education that emphasizes engaging students in exploring natural phenomena in various ways to construct theories and to explain phenomena like scientists do. Modeling-based science inquiry allows students to experience something that close to the inquiring activities of scientists, and the process of explaining abstract scientific concepts concrete. However, modeling is currently underutilized in the field, mainly due to a lack of teacher understanding of modeling-based science inquiry instruction. Prior research has shown that teachers have limited awareness of models and modeling, and how to teach them. In this context, there is a need to explore teachers' development of PCK related to modeling-based science inquiry instruction to find how modeling can be effectively applied in science classes. Furthermore, exploring PCK development through knowledge exchange between the three realms of PCK is essential to suggest ways to develop teachers' expertise in modeling-based science inquiry instruction. Therefore, this study aims to explore the process of elementary teachers' PCK development through knowledge exchange between the realms of PCK on modeling-based science inquiry instruction. Based on this purpose, specific research questions are as follows. First, how does elementary teachers’ PCK develop in TLC on modeling-based science inquiry instruction? Second, how does elementary teachers’ PCK develop during the enacting modeling-based science inquiry instruction? As a research method, this study conducted TLC with three elementary school teachers and had each teacher enact modeling-based science inquiry instruction in their classrooms. In this process, we collected content representations (hereafter CoRe) written by teachers, the discourse data shared by the participants in the TLC and the data from the in-depth interviews, and the data related to the modeling-based science inquiry instruction (lesson plan, lesson videos, in-depth interviews, and PaP-eRs). As CoRe is a tool for capturing teachers' pPCK, we explored the changes in pPCK in the CoRe written by the research participants before and after knowledge exchange and analyzed them using qualitative content analysis according to the sub-components of the PCK professional knowledge bases. we analyzed the process of PCK development through knowledge exchange between the PCK realms using grounded research methods based on the discourse data, the data from the in-depth interviews, and the data related to the modeling-based science inquiry instruction. The research results are as follows. First, The PCK of elementary teachers who participated in the TLC on modeling-based science inquiry developed in the aspects of knowledge of students, pedagogical knowledge, and assessment knowledge, through knowledge exchange between the PCK realms. Specifically, teachers who focused on students' misconceptions, prior knowledge, and interests came to consider students' difficulties and the skills and attitudes they need in modeling activities, due to the knowledge exchange between cPCK and pPCK. In addition, teachers who used investigation as a teaching strategy through knowledge exchange between cPCK and pPCK and between ePCKR and pPCK, came to indicate that they would use modeling in small group as a teaching strategy and planned to teach meta-modeling knowledge. Teachers primarily used written assessments to ensure that students correctly understood science concepts, but the ePCKR-to-pPCK and cPCK-to-pPCK knowledge exchanges shifted them toward using models as assessment tools and providing feedback as they assessed student performance. Second, The PCK of elementary teachers who enacted modeling-based science inquiry instruction developed in aspects of curricular knowledge, knowledge of students, pedagogical knowledge, and assessment knowledge, through knowledge exchange between ePCK and pPCK. Teachers who had limited curricular knowledge of the ‘Biology and Environment’ unit prior to enacting the lessons showed improved understanding of the curriculum and made connections between curriculum knowledge and meta-modeling knowledge as a result of the knowledge exchange between ePCK and pPCK during planning, teaching, and reflecting on the lessons as they reorganized the unit learning into a modeling-based science inquiry instruction. In addition, teachers who focused on student interest, prior knowledge, and misconceptions before enacting the lesson observed student performance in the actual lesson and reflected specifically on how to support students. As a result of this knowledge exchange between ePCK and pPCK, teachers showed an improved knowledge of the difficulties that students will face and suggested instructional strategies to address student characteristics and misconceptions that impact modeling activities. The three teachers who planned modeling-based science inquiry instruction prior to enacting the lessons showed changes in their pedagogical knowledge as a result of the knowledge exchange between ePCK and pPCK, modifying the way they used modeling in their lessons. Finally, teachers who had planned an assessment that utilized one assessment tool to assess a single scientific concept based on the curriculum's achievement standards before enacting the lesson changed to add new assessment criteria and utilize multiple assessment tools, including models, as they observed students' performance in the lesson and through knowledge exchange between ePCK and pPCK. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that elementary teachers' PCK develops through knowledge exchange between the PCK realms, including reflecting on previously conducted instructions with models (knowledge exchange between ePCKR and pPCK) and learning normative knowledge about modeling-based science inquiry instruction (knowledge exchange between cPCK and pPCK), and knowledge exchange between ePCK and pPCK as they plan (ePCKP), teach (ePCKT), and reflect on (ePCKR) modeling-based science inquiry instruction. Based on these conclusions, this study discusses the need to identify personal factors that influence elementary teachers' knowledge exchange between PCK realms and the need to develop effective modeling-based science inquiry teaching methods. Also, This study is significant in that it empirically validated the usefulness of RCM, which theoretically explained the mechanism of PCK development through knowledge exchange, and explored teachers' professional development in science teaching as a way to effectively utilize modeling-based science inquiry instruction in the field.
