The purpose of this study was to serve as a basis for better understanding of the popular star idolization phenomenon by the youth, by examining the relationship of their ego-identity to idolization intensity by gender and age. The research questions were posed as below:
1. What is the actual state of the youth's idolizing popular starts?
(1) What is their favorite popular star type?
(2) What is the reason they like popular stars? and to what extent do they idolize them?
2. What difference do their gender and age make to their idolization of popular stars?
(1) What is the reason they like popular stars by gender and age?
(2) Are there any differences between their idolization of popular stars?
3. What is the relationship of their popular star idolization to their ego-identity?
The subjects in this study were 538 middle and high school students from the city of Incheon. The intensity of their popular star idolization was measured by the questionnaire prepared by this researcher, which was based on the questionnaires used by Raviv, et. al. And Seo Bong-yeon(1975)'s questionnaire was utilized to track their ego-identity. The collected data were analyzed with SPSS program, and frequency, percentage, t-test and correlation analysis were employed. The major findings of this study were as follows.
First, as a result of investigating the general characteristics of the entertainer idolization, the adolescents investigated preferred singers, among popular stars. By gender, the boy students favored movie actors, television actors and comedians more than the girl students, but the girl students preferred singers more than their counterparts. By school, the middle school students were more fond of singers and comedians than the high school students, and the latter group was more partial to movie actors and television actors than the former. The largest reason they liked popular stars was their outstanding talent, followed by appearance and Individuality in the order named.
In general, more students were in a stage where popular stars were idolized, than where they were imitated. By gender, more boy students were in a stage of imitation, whereas the girls were in a stage of idolization. There was no gap between the middle and high school students.
Second, as a result of looking over their ego-identity, human relations were rated the best. By gender, the girl students had better human relations than the boys(t=-3.05, p<.01). By school, the high school students outperformed the middle school students In unique qualities(t=-2.23, p<.05).
Third, as a result of investigating the relationship of idolization intensity to ego-identity, the students who imitated popular stars were more conscious of self-existence than those who idolized them(t= -2.55, p<.05). And those who idolized them had better human relations than the others who imitated them(t=2.42, p<.05). In conclusion, it's found that a higher idolization of popular stars led to a weaker self-consciousness and better human relations.
As the above-mentioned findings suggested that popular stars are the identification model of the youth and give a lot of impact on their psychology, our society needs to check popular stars with attention to place adolescent culture on the right track. Besides, mass media are required to try to establish sound youth culture.
