As is well-known, Pansori is a musico-dramatic tradition which is unique to Korea. Many researchers have tried to clarify its literary aspects and dramatic styles. But few have studied about the characteristics of its music. This survey is attempted to deal with the nature of the "tollongje" of Pansori mainly from the musicological standpoint.
The "tollongje" of Pansori is thought to have been developed by Kwon Sam-duk. Its melodic type resembles the loud and peculiar type of call which sometimes called "Kwonma- song." Thus "tollongje" is also called "Kwonmasongje" or "Sollongje."
Hence, this thesic can be explains into four parts which are as follows :
1) At first, since the "tollongje" of Pansori mainly developed by Kwon Sam-duk, the life of Kwon Sam-duk should be clearly explained. Not like many other Pansori si- ngers : Kwon Sam - duk is presumed to have been a descendants of a Yangban (noble status) family.
And it was believed that he had tried to exercise his personal Pansori ability in a small cave at a small village near Chonju- city, Chollabukdo Province.
2) The study about the composition of melody and the character of rhythm of Kwon Sam-duk's "tollongje" are the main subject of this thesis.
Therfore, here I tried to analyze some cases of "tollongje."
They are "Kun- no- sa- ryong" (provincial soldiers) which is singing in the 'Chunhyang-Ka" (Song of Chunhyang), and "Song of We-kuk-ja" (song for the country) which is singing in the "Chokpyok-ka" (Song of the Red Cliff), and the case of Nolbo who is trying to catch the swallow in the "Hungbo-ka" (Song of Hungbo).
3) The method of singing in the "tollongje" style is also another important aspects of this thesis.
4) Last but not least, I have tried to clear out the staus of "tollongie" of Kwon Sam-duk in the history of Pansori.
Even at this time, as I know, not many researchers have tried to analyze the "tollongje" of Pansori. It is, therefore, my comfort that this thesis can be a contribution to the development of Korean Pansori which is one important factor of establishing the national soverignty and independence.
