This study examined the effects of self-leadership and positive thinking on creative ability among university students majoring in contemporary dance, as well as the mediating role of cognitive flexibility in these relationships. Using a quantitative research design, the study empirically identified the factors through which self-leadership and positive thinking enhance creative ability and specifically investigated whether cognitive flexibility functions as a mediating variable between these constructs.
To achieve the purpose of the study, an online Google Forms survey was conducted with 182 university students majoring in contemporary dance between August 27, 2025, and January 7, 2026. The questionnaire consisted of measures assessing self-leadership, positive thinking, creative ability, and cognitive flexibility. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 25.0, employing exploratory factor analysis, reliability analysis, correlation analysis, multiple regression analysis, and mediation regression analysis.
The results of the multiple regression analysis indicated that self-leadership had a significant positive effect on creative ability. Among the subfactors of self-leadership, natural reward strategies and behavior-oriented strategies emerged as key predictors of creative ability. These findings suggest that such strategies positively facilitate the process through which contemporary dance majors challenge difficult creative tasks and accumulate experiences of performance achievement. In contrast, constructive thought strategies were found to have a negative effect on creative ability, particularly originality, implying that in contexts such as contemporary dance creation—where free thinking and unstructured exploration are essential—such strategies may instead constrain the expansion of creative thinking.
The mediation regression analysis produced the following findings. First, the alternative dimension of cognitive flexibility partially mediated the relationships between natural reward strategies of self-leadership and the originality and compositional aspects of creative ability. In addition, the alternative dimension of cognitive flexibility partially mediated the relationship between constructive thought strategies of self-leadership and the compositional aspect of creative ability. Second, the control dimension of cognitive flexibility partially mediated the relationships between natural reward strategies and behavior-oriented strategies of self-leadership and the originality and compositional aspects of creative ability. Furthermore, the control dimension of cognitive flexibility partially mediated the relationship between constructive thought strategies of self-leadership and the compositional aspect of creative ability. Third, the alternative dimension of cognitive flexibility partially mediated the relationships between subjective satisfaction in positive thinking and the originality and compositional aspects of creative ability. Likewise, the alternative dimension of cognitive flexibility partially mediated the relationships between goal attainment in positive thinking and the originality and compositional aspects of creative ability. Fourth, the alternative dimension of cognitive flexibility was also found to partially mediate the relationship between goal attainment in positive thinking and the originality and compositional aspects of creative ability.
Taken together, these findings demonstrate that self-leadership serves as a key factor positively influencing the creative ability of university students majoring in contemporary dance, while cognitive flexibility performs a mediating role as an important psychological and relational factor within this relationship.
The findings of this study hold psychological and cognitive significance in that they empirically verified the structural relationships among self-leadership, positive thinking, and creative ability in university students majoring in contemporary dance. Accordingly, future research should expand the scope of participants, adopt more multidimensional approaches to measuring creative ability, and consider external factors influencing the creative ability of dance majors alongside the establishment of servant leadership–based organizational systems. In addition, dance education settings should develop self-directed creative education programs designed to strengthen self-leadership. These implications are proposed as practical directions for subsequent research and educational practice.
