The purpose of this study was to examine the emotional empathy skills and parental efficacy of parents with preschoolers, their perception of their preschool children's emotional regulation, and the relationship of these variables. Four research questions were posed:
    1. Are there any differences between the selected parents in emotional empathy skills and parental efficacy?
    2. Are there any differences among the selected preschoolers in emotional regulation perceived by their parents?
    3. What is the relationship between the emotional empathy skills of the parents and their preschool children's emotional regulation?
    4. What is the relationship between the parental efficacy of the parents and their preschool children's emotional regulation?
The subjects in this study were the parents who were selected from childcare centers and kindergartens in the city of Busan. Their children were at the Western ages of 3, 4 and 5. A survey was conducted by the homeroom teachers of the preschoolers, and the answer sheets from 239 respondents were analyzed. As for analysis of the collected data, the statistical package SPSS 18.0 was employed to obtain statistical data on frequency and percentage, and t-test and Pearson product-moment correlation coefficients were utilized.
The findings of the study were as follows:
First, whether there would be any differences between the parents in emotional empathy skills and parental efficacy was analyzed. As for emotional empathy skills, significant differences were found in overall emotional empathy skills and both of the subfactors that were emotional resonance and empathic concern. The mothers excelled the fathers in emotional empathy skills. There were no statistically significant differences in paternal efficacy.
Second, whether there would be any differences among their preschool children in emotional regulation perceived by the parents was analyzed. As a result, the parents were significantly different from each other in perception of insecure/negative emotion, part of emotional regulation. The fathers considered their preschool children to regulate their emotion in a more insecure and negative manner than the mothers.
Third, the correlation between the emotional empathy skills of the parents and the emotional regulation of the preschoolers was analyzed. Concerning the links between the emotional empathy skills of the fathers and the emotional regulation of the preschoolers, the overall emotional empathy skills of the fathers had a significant positive correlation with the adaptive emotional regulation of the preschoolers and had a negative correlation with their insecure/negative emotion. Among the subfactors of emotional empathy skills of the fathers, emotional resonance was positively correlated with their insecure/negative emotion. Empathic concern had a positive correlation with their adaptive emotional regulation and had a negative correlation with their insecure/negative emotion.
In regard to the links between the emotional empathy skills of the mothers and the emotional regulation of the preschoolers, the overall empathy skills of the mothers had a significant positive correlation with the adaptive emotional regulation of the preschoolers. Among the subfactors of their emotional empathy skills, emotional resonance was positively correlated to insecure/negative emotion, and empathic concern was positively correlated with adaptive emotional regulation and negatively with insecure/negative emotion.
Fourth, the relationship between the parental efficacy of the parents and the emotional regulation of the preschoolers was analyzed. As to the links between the paternal efficacy of the fathers and the emotional regulation of the preschoolers, overall paternal efficacy had a significant positive correlation with the adaptive emotional regulation of the preschoolers and had a negative correlation with their insecure/negative emotion. Among the subfactors of paternal efficacy, all the love, control, communication, education and overall efficacy were positively correlated to adaptive emotional regulation and negatively with insecure/negative emotion.
As for the links between the maternal efficacy of the mothers and the emotional regulation of the preschoolers, overall maternal efficacy had a significant positive correlation with adaptive emotional regulation and had a negative correlation with insecure/negative emotion.
The above-mentioned findings of the study are expected to make it possible to have a more perfect understanding of the emotional regulation of preschoolers and how the superb psychological and emotional experience of parents such as emotional empathy skills and parental efficacy, especially active empathy skills of fathers, regulates the negative emotion of preschoolers in a positive way.
