This study investigated actual condition of space use of the day care center for the elderly being one of in home care facilities to supply basic material required to make space programming.
The subjects were four of the day care centers at Daegu that were founded since 1997. The day care centers had different operating system depending upon operation and management entities, and most of them belonged to annex facilities. The study investigated background of the introduction as well as operation system of the day care centers at home and abroad to survey current state of the day care centers in Korea and to investigate them in advance. The study investigated current state of the day care centers by case study as well as questionnaire survey to examine space use in accordance with common characteristics and operating programs. And, the study investigated connections depending upon features of each space of the day care centers to suggest space programming.
The day care centers in Korea could be classified into in home care facilities, an annex of general nursing home, an annex of general care facility for the elderly, an annex of nursing home, an annex of hospitals and an annex of religious organizations, etc.
Women occupied as high as 89.0% of total users of the day care centers. The older the users, the higher the rate of use. The commonest diseases were in order of dementia (26.0%), paralysis (22.0%) and arthritis (18.5%).
The space use of the day care centers was as follows: Each center had different programs without classification of space depending upon features to make use of space comprehensively at multi-purpose room (day care room) and to be short of adequate environment. Tables and floors were mainly used to do organizational activities rather than individual activities and group activities.
The day care centers had spaces for training and medical treatment, bathing and supports, meal, and management and operation, etc.
This study investigated connection depending upon features of each space to suggest space programming of the day care centers.
The study classified the day care centers depending upon space programming to examine space use in accordance with general features and programs by using case study as well as questionnaire survey and to make out basic material for appropriate designs.
