In communication between satellites orbiting the earth and ground stations,
electromagnetic waves are affected by atmospheric effects such as refraction, attenuation,
and delay. Recently, researches have been conducted to predict attenuation, refraction, and
delay in the atmosphere between satellites and ground stations. However, studies considering
the actual satellite orbit and the mounted antenna have not been conducted, the analysis of
the sate antenna and inhomogeneous atmosphere are required.
In this paper, the radiation of reflector antenna and inhomogeneous atmosphere were
analyzed by considering the physical optics, ray tracing technique, and geometrical optics.
The reflector antenna was divided into a feed antenna and reflector, and the surface current
was calculated on the reflector and electromagnetic fields from the feed horn antenna. The
shape of the reflector is determined according to the focal length, diameter, and feed structure,
and is divided into numerous surfaces according to the radius and height of the cylindrical
coordinate system. Atmospheric environment is analyzed by generating rays, including
electromagnetic field at surface equivalent current on a divided surface. The atmosphere is
stratified into multiple layers by altitude, and the refractive index in the stratified layer is
calculated using the meteorological data. The path and electromagnetic field of the ray from
the satellite to ground stations are calculated using refractive index and the angle of
incidence at the boundary of the stratified layer, when it passes through stratified
atmospheric layers. For the convergence of the path, the process of modifying the angle of
the ray is repeated so that the error between arrival point and target observation point is less
than 0.01 wavelengths. When the path of the ray is determined, the transmitted wave
calculation considering polarization and electromagnetic field calculation using geometrical
optics are performed.
In this paper, electromagnetic wave propagation between satellite and ground stations
were analyzed by using high-frequency method considering satellite antenna and
inhomogeneous atmosphere. Our method is useful for satellite mission such as navigation,
surveillance, and constellation networks that require the accurate estimation of the satellite
links from the satellite to the ground station.
