The purpose of this study was to examine risk factors and protective factors affecting Internet game addiction amongst middle school students. The subjects of this study were 655 students who were in the middle schools in Gimcheon Gyungbuk. The measurements used to examine the student' risk protective factors were as following: Internet game addiction Scale, Negative Emotionality Scale, Depression/Anxiety Scale, Aggression Scale, School Adaptation Scale and finally Self-control Scale. The collected data from this study was analyzed using Pearson correlational analysis, t-tests, and hierarchical multiple regression analysis.
The results of the present study were as follows: First off, boys showed higher level of internet game addiction, as well as indicating higher levels of adaptability in school than girls, on the other hand, girls showed higher levels of aggression than boys. Secondly, hierarchical multiple regression analysis indicated that negative emotionality and depression/anxiety as a risk factor and school adaptation as a protective factor were found to be the most powerful predictors for boys. Furthermore aggression as risk factors, as well as protective factors such as self-control, were significantly related to girls' internet game addiction. Lastly, hierarchical multiple regression analysis indicated that the variance of risk factors for internet game addiction tended to decrease as protective factors were added.
