The Effects of the communication skills of athletic leaders on the motivation and perceived performance of student-athletes Ko, Geon-Gook Advisor : Prof. Kim-Hyun-Woo Major in Phsical Education, Gradute School of Education, Chosun Universiry The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between physical education coaches’ communication competence, student-athletes’ motivation, and perceived performance. Within school sport settings, coaches perform roles that extend beyond technical instruction by providing educational guidance and emotional support. In this context, communication between coaches and student-athletes functions as an important factor associated with athletes’ psychological experiences and perceptions of their own performance. In particular, interactions established through communication are closely related to the level of motivation displayed by student-athletes and to how they evaluate their athletic performance. To achieve the purpose of the study, coaches’ communication competence was established as the independent variable, motivation as the mediating variable, and perceived performance as the dependent variable. The participants consisted of student-athletes participating in soccer, baseball, and taekwondo. Data were collected through a questionnaire survey and analyzed using correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis to examine the relationships among the variables. The results indicated that coaches’ communication competence had a positive association with student-athletes’ motivation. Motivation was also found to be related to perceived performance. In addition, communication competence showed a direct relationship with perceived performance while also contributing indirectly through motivation. These findings suggest that the communication competence of physical education coaches is closely connected to the motivational experiences and performance perceptions of student-athletes. Effective communication may contribute to creating a positive sport environment in which student-athletes can maintain motivation and develop favorable perceptions of their performance. The study is meaningful in that it provides empirical evidence regarding the relationships among communication competence, motivation, and perceived performance in school sport settings and offers practical implications for coaching practice.
