When the Naver web novel platform was opened in Jan. 2013, the newly coined word ‘web novel’ refers to a web-based novel that used to be called by various names such as internet novel, cyber novel or others paid for per chapter to be defined. As the genre was coined newly, the scale of the market for the web novels would grow rapidly. As the scale of the market grew remarkably, the web novel platforms would introduce the commercial advertisements not only for the existing users but also for the ordinary people. In particular, Naver used the materials of the serial novels served by their platform to produce advertisements. One of them was Remarried Empress, a popular novel served by the platform of Naver.
Remarried Empress is a web novel of the romance fantasy genre. The genre was newly coined as the web novel markets grew, which means that the history of the genre is not so long. Nevertheless, Naver exposed the web novel to the commercial advertisements, which means that Naver appreciated its representability and potential of success highly. Thus, this study analyzed the characteristics of the romance fantasy genre and the representative romance fantasy web novel Remarried Empress that had been rapidly established within the web novel market.
The second chapter of this study analyzes such aspects of the romance fantasy genres as development and conditions of the romance fantasy genre, cliche in the genre and sub-types and thereby, discusses the identity and significance of the romance fantasy genre. Above all, this chapter reviews the conventional romance genres and fantasy ones theoretically to discuss the background for the romance fantasy genre. Thereupon, this chapter reviews the specific process of the development of the romance fantasy genre as well as its cliche, representative sub-types, etc. Through such analysis, the researcher could confirm the fact that the romance fantasy genre would urge the female readers to realize their desire, while encouraging them to depart from the oppressive real world and thereby, experience pleasure and hedonism. It is perceived that owing to such encouragement, the romance fantasy genre could secure a wide spectrum of the readers, being successful in the market, while being established firmly within the web novels genres.
The third chapter samples the romance fantasy novel Remarried Empress and thereby, analyzes the characteristics of the romance fantasy genre specifically. In the novel, the heroine dominates the male figures. In terms of status and rank, she is not behind the male figures, demonstrating her ability highly. Even in terms of love affairs, the heroine selects her partner actively, and thus, the female readers would well experience some vicarious satisfaction. And such setting up of character is linked to the point where the independent woman’s epic is expressed positively. The female characters including the heroine who show some independent tendency not only in such private domains as love and marriage but also in political area or external activities are depicted as successful women achieving their goals. Such plot is also a characteristic of the romance fantasia genre matching female readers’ discovery of self-ego and realization of their desire.
Besides, Remarried Empress is a work making use of the cliche positively within the genre as discussed in the second chapter. The cliches of time, space and characters are reflected in the entire work only to enrich the epic structure of the work. The cliches would function to help the women readers who could hardly fulfill their desire in the real society to depart from their reality to experience pleasure and hedonism.
On the other hand, it is noteworthy to discover a queer element in Remarried Empress that follows a typical hetero-sexual plot. The work uses the homo-sexual affinity among women for its epic. Sometimes, it expresses the traits of the characters by using the home-sexual element. All in all, the elements of homo-sexual social affinity and homo-sexuality would conduce to the establishment of the relationship and the interpretation of characters’ personality and tendency.
As described above, this study aimed to analyze the work Remarried Empress to understand the aspects of the serial web novels and the uses of OSMU, and thereby, examine the general characteristics of the web novels influencing their readers much. The web novels use some intuitive titles so that their readers could decide in a short time to read them or not, while plotting the paragraphs simply. They may well use the characteristics of the web novels to present illustration covers, illustrations, characters’ icons, etc. Moreover, in an effort to form a regular level of readers, some of them uses such production techniques as stimulation of their curiosity, horizon of expectation and concern.
The web novels popular among the web users are characterized by their readers’ sympathy and sense of affinity as well as active replies. Readers would share their appreciations or emotions with other readers through the replies, while criticizing the characters and nicknaming them. The result would be a playing culture formed on-line. The works forming such a fandom would well be used as raw materials of OSMU owing to their high reputations and popularity. Remarried Empress has also been used for webtoon, audio drama, mobile game, drama, TV commercials and books. Even the readers who were not aware of the web novels would be interested in the contents using the web novels to be attracted to the web novels many of whom would be new readers of the web novels.
The fourth chapter of this study discusses the relationship between Korea’s popular culture and romance fantasy genres. In particular, the researcher attempted to find the similarities between romance fantasy and such diverse genres as classical novels, TV dramas, Internet novels and fan fiction. Before the emergence of romance fantasy genre, various genres of the popular culture used the epic structure similar to that of the romance fantasy genre. They functioned, too, to encourage the women to discover their self-ego and release their desires and needs. In terms of women’s discovery of self-ego and their release of desires, they may well be similar to the romance fantasy stimulating women’s desire and helping them to experience a vicarious satisfaction. Furthermore, this study focused on the female space on the web for Internet novels and fan fictions. The women readers enjoying the internet novels and fan fictions use the website to share their book reviews and form a social consensus, interacting with each other. The women readers sharing the similar social experiences could well argue for their self-egos and desires freely in this space. Such phenomenon would well be linked with the web novel platform and its readers’ system or the fan cafe communities to help form ‘Les Hétérotopies’.
The romance fantasy epic formed by female readers’ needs and desires used to be enjoyed in the off-line market and then, grew rapidly through the web media. And it would be recognized as an independent genre owing to their female readers who have got a power from the web-based ‘Les Hétérotopies’. The fact that the romance fantasy genres were born from the web novels would well be the symbolic event that the fictitious stories handling women’s desires like the Korean pop culture genres have been given a genre with their identity.
The web novel and the romance fantasy genre are the cultures that have opened a new horizon for the domestic sub-cultures formed by those introduced from abroad. It is created from our culture and subjective perspective, growing based on the domestic market, which is very significant. Among them, the romance fantasy genre is significant in that it has named the fantastic story stimulating women’s desires that had been used in various areas of the pop culture. This study may well be significant in that it would understand the web novels as a pop culture reflecting people’s needs and desires and thereby, that it discusses its identity and meaning.
