A Rhetorical Critical Approach

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between the traditions of wisdom and the book of Amos by analyzing as a rhetorical critical approach the three main subjects which are the day of YHWH, against the Nations, and the Remnant.
Originally, the three main subjects have root in the prophet tradition; However, the day of YHWH, against the Nations, and the Remnant are showed elements of wisdom traditions. Thus, this thesis will show the flow of wisdom tradition in the book of Amos as an prophecy.
The first chapter introduces the purpose and the method of the research, and to study previous scholarly works of the relationship between the wisdom tradition and the prophecy. The second chapter studied where wisdom literature is in the Old Testament, and the relationship between the wisdom and the law, and also the wisdom and the prophecy. The third chapter deals with the reversal of the day of YHWH. It was a day of joy and a day of salvation in the Pentateuch and the Deuteronomy History. However, the day is described as the day when the woe comes in the book of Amos; that is, the element of inversion appears. The fourth chapter explicates the totality of against the Nations. Universalism emerges as the God of Israel emerges as the God who rules the nations; and the graduated numbering are found. These indicate that the book of Amos is under the influence of wisdom tradition. The fifth chapter describes the reverence of the remnant of YHWH. The idea of remnant is a prophecy tradition example, and so is the concept of justice and righteousness. However, the appearance of these themes through God-human dialogue and parables once argues that the book of Amos is under the influence of the wisdom tradition. Especially, water likened to righteousness, is a word found in the book of Job. The sixth chapter represents wisdom as the rhetoric of prophecy. Emphasize that the three main subjects which are the day of YHWH, against the Nations, and the Remnant mentioned above are under the influence of the wisdom tradition from a rhetorical perspective. Finally, the capter seventh makes conclusions of this thesis summarizing the research and showing limitations. To thrown of theological application is being modern community of faith.
The contribution of this paper is that it has discovered and studied the flow of wisdom-traditional elements in the central theme of the prophecies which are the day of YHWH, against the Nations, and the Remnant. It turned out that the wisdom tradition had an effect on the prophecy in especially the book of Amos.
