The humanity has pursued the art of forms throughout its history from the past to the present, leading to creation of various cultures and civilizations in the lives of human beings. It can be found that the form has served as a basis for the underlying principles of various three-dimensional formative artistic features since the emergence of art in the prehistoric times. In addition, the formative artistic expression, which originated from the relationship between human beings and the nature, has been developed into a means for revealing the human intention to make expression. Such formative artistic expression can be considered to represent the most universal behavior of human to convey their thoughts and ideas. In the ancient times, the formative art principles, centered around the repetition, were often incorporated into architecture, fine art, and particularly, crafts. Those principles of formative art include the repetition, balance, contrast, proportion, uniformity and variation, among which the repetition is divided into the repetitions, such as the repetition of same expression, repetition as repetitive behavior, and repetition copying the originals. This researcher conducted a study on ceramic formative artistic expression rendered through repetitive actions which reflected the principle of repetitive formative art, and through that, intended to create various ceramic formative arts. Moreover, this study was intended to broaden the scope of ceramic formative artistic expression by conducting various researches based on repetitive actions, while allowing more flexible forms to be created, compared to existing modes of formative art, by using the physical properties of soil for ceramic formative artistic expression.
In this study, firstly, theoretical aspects of the relationship between formative art actions of human and repetition was examined based on understanding of formative art, and the characteristics of the formative art principle, revealed in arts as found in multiple literatures, were summarized.
Second, the concept and characteristics of repetition were classified in this study, and various techniques and formative artistic features were investigated. Furthermore, formative artistic expression, rendered through repetitive actions, were specified and described.
Third, the process of art creation based on artists' repetitive actions, along with expressive techniques, were described in the case study on related art works. Through that, it was found that the repetitive actions had important meaning in the formative artistic expressions. The ceramic formative arts, expanded through formative artistic expression of 'piling, twisting, tearing, and rolling', defined by this researcher, were investigated.
Fourth, the repetitive actions of this researcher were classified into 4 formative artistic expressions, i.e., piling, twisting, tearing, and rolling, which were applied to the art creation process. Thus, the ceramic formative art works were created based on repetitive actions. Such formative artistic expression made this study differentiated from other studies on ceramic formative art as the focus was placed on the behavioral elements of this researcher.
Fifth, based on production and analyses of the works investigated in this study, it was found that the formative artistic expression was used as the themes in the studies on various formative arts rendered through repetitive actions.
In this study, the repetitive actions were classified into 4 formative artistic expression, i.e., piling, twisting, tearing, and rolling. This study, which investigated the ceramic formative art rendered through those repetitive actions, reexamined the possibility that the physical properties could be expressed in various ways and created an opportunity for expanding into creative formative artistic expression. This researcher hopes that the results of this study would provide useful basis for the succeeding studies of which results can be applied to creative formative artistic expression in the field of studies on various formative arts.
