This study examines the grammatical categories and characteristics of adnominal nouns explicitly and systematizes the criteria for their identification. Furthermore, it classifies adnominal nouns by type and presents a list of the adnominal nouns addressed in this paper based on the previously established identification criteria. Regarding the list, this study aimed to examine elements that could be newly treated as adnominal nouns, focusing on loanwords that have been largely overlooked in previous discussions. This review considered both lexicographical aspects and practical usage.
Accordingly, Chapter 1 states the research purpose, briefly introduces relevant prior research, and presents the study’s subject and structure.
Chapter 2 examines the grammatical categories of the adnominal noun class discussed in prior research. That is, depending on the discussion, this group has been treated under various concepts such as root, syntactic root, nominal bound-root, and root-word, in addition to adnominal nouns. This chapter reviews the differences in perspective explicitly underlying these categorizations.
Chapter 3 identifies the primary grammatical characteristics of adnominal nouns and, based on that, organizes the criteria applicable in distinguishing them. Furthermore, it classifies adnominal nouns according to their suffix and case particle attachment patterns. It examines how the degree of nominality and adnominality varies even within the adnominal noun category.
Chapter 4 reviews new examples that were not previously treated as adnominal nouns in the literature but can be classified as such, categorizing them into Sino-Korean words, loanwords, and native Korean words. It particularly focuses on examining the adnominal noun-like characteristics of loanwords, where noun modification is the primary function. This paper presents a list of adnominal nouns, including these examples.
Finally, Chapter 5 summarizes the entire research, presents its significance and limitations, and concludes the discussions.
