In this study, we present a fabrication process for directly patterning PEDOT:PSS electrodes on commercially available polyester fabric using a laser-induced phase separation technique, followed by the construction of textile-based supercapacitors. Conventional printing-based methods have been limited by low patterning resolution and the need for specially engineered fabrics, restricting their applicability to truly wearable devices. To overcome these limitations, we uniformly coated a PEDOT:PSS solution containing the surfactant Triton X-100 onto the fabric and induced selective phase separation and localized adhesion control through continuous-wave laser irradiation under precisely optimized processing conditions.
This approach enabled the electrode regions to achieve high conductivity and mechanical robustness, while the non-electrode regions were mechanically cleared of residual conductive polymer, effectively eliminating leakage-current pathways between adjacent electrodes. The resulting supercapacitors exhibited a significant enhancement in electrochemical performance, with the specific capacitance increasing from 6.89 F/g to 14.32 F/g at a current density of 1 A/g. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements showed ideal rectangular-shaped electrochemical profiles, and galvanostatic charge discharge (GCD) curves remained symmetric. The devices also demonstrated
excellent long-term cycling stability, retaining over 92% of their initial capacitance after more than 10,000 charge–discharge cycles. Furthermore, devices directly patterned onto commercial umbrella fabric reliably powered LEDs without performance degradation, even under repeated folding, bending, and - 33 opening/closing motions, highlighting the robustness of the proposed method for everyday textile applications.
Overall, this work significantly improves the electrochemical performance and mechanical reliability of PEDOT:PSS-based flexible supercapacitors through high-resolution laser patterning, hydrogen-bond–controlled residue removal, and seamless integration onto common textiles. The proposed approach offers strong potential for extension to various textile-based wearable electronics, self-powered systems, and sensor technologies used in clothing, bags, and tents, providing an important contribution to sustainable energy storage and next-generation
fiber-electronic device development.
