This paper proposes a single photon counting image sensor with QVGA resolution for low power and high dynamic range imaging. The photon counting sensor is implemented using in-pixel 8 MIM capacitors and a column parallel digital counter. In addition, to prevent the peak current due to the synchronized clock supplied to the pixel array from hindering the accurate photon detection, a clock with up to 4 different phases can be applied. An appropriate column precharge method is implemented to reduce the power consumption that occurs when the transistor drives the long metal of the column in a high intensity environment. In addition, in order to prevent the dynamic range from being reduced due to saturation in a high-intensity environment due to the clock authorized in Clocked Recharging and to prevent power consumption due to a large number of clock inputs, the Direct Path for Asynchronous Recharging was arranged in Column Parallel. As a result, the proposed sensor was designed to reduce power consumption and have sufficient dynamic range in a high-intensity environment compared to the conventional Clocked Recharging method.
