Normal siblings are very important people for disabled siblings next to parents and have to be together for a long time. They have difficulties in having conflicts and adapting with their disabled siblings during their each stage of development. As protectors of disabled siblings, whom they live with for the rest of their lives, normal siblings’ attitudes may have influence on their psycho-social adaptation depending on whether they are accommodative and supportive or hostile and embarrassed. In this study, I tried to analyze how psycho-social adaptation of normal siblings, who have disabled siblings and are aged between 20 and 30, is influenced by their attitudes toward their disabled siblings. The reason I chose the ages 20-30, is that they have substantial responsibilities to protect and have wide personal relations, compared to the other age groups.
To achieve this, 121 people were randomly chosen from three parent meetings, Chungnam association for blind people, a living institution for the disabled in Asan and a cyber café for parents of disabled people in Suwon. They were surveyed from April 26th 2011 to May 11th 2011, and the survey was used as an analytic data.
These results from the research can be summarized as follows:
Firstly, the analysis of the influence of normal siblings’ attitudes toward their disabled siblings on their psycho-social adaptation shows that more accommodative or supportive attitudes may result in higher psycho-social adaptation. While hostile attitudes are proven to have nearly no influence, their psycho-social adaptation tends to be higher as they take less embarrassed attitudes.
Secondly, more receptivity for disabled siblings leads to higher self-efficacy, and in the case of control, less control provides higher self-efficacy.
Third, more supportive attitudes toward disabled siblings result in higher life satisfaction, and in the case of control, disabled sisters affect higher life satisfaction.
Lastly, more receptivity and less embarrassed attitudes toward disabled siblings have more positive influence on personal relations and problem solving skills.
As the results show, we know that receptivity has the most influence on normal siblings’ psycho-social adaptation, however, it should be said that their psycho-social adaptation should not only depend on receptivity, because supportive attitudes are the ones that have the most influence on life satisfaction. Also, in personal relations and problem solving skills, both receptivity and less embarrassed attitudes have influence so we know that external environmental influence interacts with social adaptation.
These results display the importance of normal siblings’ attitudes toward their disabled siblings, created by education and experiences. Since the existing welfare institutes for the disabled focus more on receptivity for the disabled, rather than attitudes, it shows the necessity of not only receptivity for the disabled, but also of other aspects, such as approaching with attitudes.
