This study was to unify·analyze the subject study by the meta-analysis method in order to investigate the related variables that affected the underachieving gifted childs academic achievement.
This study was to make the variable related to the effect on the underachieving gifted childs academic achievement as independent variable, and unify analyze the research papers released in the foreign countries and the masters·doctors dissertations that made the achievement as dependent variable. The purpose of this study was to investigate the results to what extent the variables related to the academic achievement established in this research affected the underachieving gifted childs academic achievement. To achieve the purpose of this research this study was to establish the research questions as follows.
First, to what degree of the grand average effect size were the 11 related variables for the underachieving gifted child affected the academic achievement?
Second, to what degree of the average effect size were 4 related to variable groups for the underachieving gifted child like individual·psychological variable group, family·parents variable group, peer relations variable group, and school·teacher variable group affected the academic achievement?
Third, how different was each effect size that the related variables for the underachieving gifted child like self concept, locus of control, anxiety·melancholy property, learning attitude, support by the parents, parents attitudes, support by the peer relations group, support by the teachers, and teacher attitudes, and environment affected the academic achievement?
Fourth, how different the effect size that affected the underachieving gifted childs academic achievement according to the variables of research method like their ages, area, I.Q., the number of persons of research object, the issued year of papers, and intervention by the source of paper materials, etc.?
To solve the research questions like above this study was to search the materials, using the online search method. This researcher collected the treatises that dealt with the underachieving gifted childs academic achievement as a dependent variable according to the subject of this research, searching The underachieving gifted child as the main keyword in the domestic·foreign materials. The number of treatises among the domestic ones related to the underachieving gifted child that could apply to the meta-analysis was just 3 volumes. Accordingly, it was not proper as meta-analysis method that drew the conclusions comprehensively and objectively using the statistical technique. The meta-analysis was not executed in the domestic research because of those volume limitations. This study was to execute the meta-analysis with the domestic treatise only. And, it was to select 51 treatises with the quantitative research as analysis object excepting for the same treatises overlapped in each search keyword among the foreign treatises. But, from the foreign prerequisite research, it was vague in the standard that determined the underachieving gifted childs academic achievement in cognitive side and affective side. Finally, this study was to select the treatises that suggested the academic achievement only in the affective side as dependant variable clearly as an object of analysis. As to the number of treatises proper to the standard in this research, all of them were 37 volumes from 1958 to 2003. After all, this study was to select the final 33 volumes as object of research analysis, excepting for 4 volumes in the homogeneity of materials and confidence interval test.
To analyses the collected materials like above total 7 experts, 4 experts in the related field and 2 experts in the statistics including this researcher, have selected 33 treatises as research object. We tried to work to classify it each according to 4 related variable groups for the underachieving gifted child established as standard of classification as <Appendix> in this study like the individual·psychological variable group, family·parents variable group, school·teacher variable group, and peer relations variable group. In addition, as to the classification of treatises with the different views among them during their works, 7 experts in classifying have discussed them thoroughly. They have excluded the things failed in agreement from the data analysis. This study was to calculate the effect size in the 33 volumes selected in this research, using the transformation formula that Wolf(1986) has suggested.
From the result of this research above, it may be summed up as follows.
First, it found out that the grand average effect size that 11 related variables for the underachieving gifted child affected the academic achievement was 0.33. When it is calculated as percentile, it was to be 62.93 percentile. It could be interpreted as it brought to increase by 12.93 percentile when the average score in the control group is calculated as 50 percentile under the situation of experimental research.
Second, the order of average effect size that 4 related variable groups for the underachieving gifted child affected the academic achievement was as follows.
The first largest thing was to be individual·psychological variable group, and its effect size was 0.37.
The second largest thing was to be family·parents variable group, and it found out that its effect size was 0.19. And, the effect size of peer relations variable group was 0.12. Also, it was shown that the effect size of the school·teacher variable group was 0.08. After all, the peer relations variable group and school·teacher variable group showed the relatively lower average effect size than the other variables.
Third, the variables that affected most among 11 related variables for the underachieving gifted childs academic achievement were anxiety·depression variable, and it found out that its effect size was 0.49. And, it shown that the effect size of self concept·learning attitude was the same as 0.36. Also, the effect sizes of support by parents and self-control variable had 0.27and 0.23 each. The effect size of poor school environment variable was 0.08, so it found out that it affected the underachieving gifted childs academic achievement at least.
Fourth, as a result of investigating the variables according to various research methods that affected the underachieving gifted childs academic achievement, the 16-18 age group, high academic students age group, among age groups had the highest effect size like 0.60. The 13-15 age group, middle school students age group, had the lowest effect size like 0.34.
In addition, this study was to investigate each effect size of area, I.Q., the number of persons of research object, the issued year of papers, and the source of data of papers.
In conclusions, under the domestic·foreign country that the gifted children with the excellent potential were degraded to the underachieving gifted children because of various causes, this study was to have deep insight of the foreign materials that have already accumulated in the research for a long time, applying to the Korean situation on a basis of study with the meta-analysis method.
From the result of this research, it could be considered as its usability was very high as basic data that could be prepared for the side effects of comprehensive plans for the education of excellence, applying it to Korean situations.
Also, this study was to be utilized as basic data that could be helpful to the preventive and therapeutic dimension in the field of consultation dealt with the side effects which variables made the gifted child with the high intelligence the underachieving gifted children who had low in academic achievement.
