This is a study on Figure Paintings in the Late Joseon Period.
The late Joseon period was the time when many changes happened. It is the time when the literature and art had clearly indicated a change in the contemporary period, and when the realistic depiction had been definitely advanced along with showing common people`s life by selecting materials of nature and reality in Joseon as what Jingyeong-sansuhwa(true-view landscape painting) or genre painting had initiated fashion in the painting history.
Also, in the Joseon period, common people briskly participated in cultural and artistic activities following the mid-19th century as the economic margin occurred gradually. Typical painters include Kim Hong-do, Shin Yun-bok, Lee Myeong-gi, and Chae Yong-sin, who depicted common people`s daily looks. Thus, the realistic and active works are said to have been mainly drawn as the life of common people at that time was moved literally.
The works in the late Joseon period, which are composed of such works, were based on Jeonshinsajo, which shows the internal world even with being accurate. As Jeonshinsajo is the Oriental art thought, which has many influences not only upon figure paintings in the late Joseon period, but also upon Oriental paintings, it contains the meaning of needing to contain even spirit with prohibiting from stopping at reproducing the figure`s shape when drawing a figure painting.
Kinds in figure paintings can be divided largely portrait, genre painting, Doseok-inmulhwa, and Gosa-inmulhwa. Even the interesting works were said to be much drawn than the early Joseon period. Thus, the late Joseon period is said to have shown the peak of development in figure paintings. What there are interesting works in the late Joseon period compared to the early Joseon Period is because chiaroscuro, which is typicalin the West, begins to be indicated along with the depiction of using the same method and line as Baechae among techniques of being used traditionally, as the western techniques begin to be flown in gradually while the frame of traditional figure paintings is maintained basically.
Painting styles in several fields were developed that expressed painter`s each individuality, though researching and analyzing by diverse works. It is thought that there would be many limitations or restrictions to creative activity at that time. However, the painters in the late Joseon period showed the sensational image at that time on what they themselves aim to express.
What these works have been preserved so far was felt to be great. Researching through analyzing artists led to having come to think deeply about art while feeling many importances in proceeding with developing diverse figure paintings along with expression on a work.
