The purpose of this study is to provide help in the marketing strategy for the rapidly changing Chinese sportswear market by analyzing the effect of the lifestyle of Chinese university students on sportswear brand characteristics and the post-purchase behaviors of the aforementioned student population.
For the purpose of this study, 361 students who are studying at a certain university in Jilin Province, China in 2014 were selected. A questionnaire survey was given to the selected students for the purpose of data collection. Based on the collected data, a simple frequency analysis, factorial analysis, reliability analysis, t-analysis, one-way ANOVA, and multiple regression analysis were conducted.
Through the said methods, the following conclusions were obtained. First, the analysis of lifestyle difference for each demographic variable showed that, for the gender variable, the male students leaned toward the achiever lifestyle, while the female students leaned toward a more traditional lifestyle. For the age variable, the senior students showed higher results than the freshman students only in terms of traditional lifestyle. For the monthly allowance variable, the students who receive more than KRW 500,000 showed higher results both in the achiever lifestyle and traditional lifestyle than the students who receive less than KRW 300,000.
Second, the analysis of sportswear brand characteristics difference for each demographic variable showed that for the gender variable, the male students showed higher results than the female students in brand awareness, brand involvement, brand loyalty, and brand image (symbolic image). For the sportswear brand characteristics, based on the students year level, there was no difference shown in all of the above factors. Moreover, the monthly allowance and sportswear brand characteristics showed no difference in all of the four elements previously mentioned.
Third, the analysis of difference in the post-purchase behavior for each demographic variable showed that the male students had a greate intention of repurchase compared with the female students. However, there was no difference in terms of satisfaction between the two groups. There was also no difference in the intention of repurchase and satisfaction between the different year levels. Both in terms of repurchase intention and satisfaction, students who receive more than KRW 500,000 of monthly allowance had higher results than the students who receive less than KRW 300,000.
Fourth, in the effect of the lifestyle of Chinese university students on the sportswear brand characteristics, the brand awareness had a positive (+) effect in the order of socialism, traditionalism, and achievement. Meanwhile, brand involvement had a positive effect in the order of traditionalism and achievement, while socialism showed no effect.
Brand loyalty had a positive effect, in the order of socialism and traditionalism, but achievement had no effect. Among brand images, the symbolic image had a positive effect in the order of achievement and traditionalism, while socialism had no effect. The functional image had a positive effect, in the order of socialism and traditionalism, but achievement had no effect.
Fifth, in the effect of the lifestyle of Chinese university students on satisfaction, it had a positive effect in the order of traditionalism, achievement, and socialism.
Sixth, in the effect of the lifestyle of Chinese university students on the intention of repurchase, it had a positive effect in the order of socialism, traditionalism, and achievement.
Marketing has a mechanism by which the consumers—who sense the brand awareness, favorable impression, identity, and importance of the product—feel the satisfaction with the product. Product satisfaction, in turn, is connected with repurchase intent. Therefore, utmost efforts should be extended for marketing strategy in order to achieve consumer satisfaction, as well as for the development of consumption lifestyles of various consumers. Customer satisfaction should be derived through continuous interest and database construction.
