In this research, the practical nature of the view of righteousness and profit of Mohism in terms of religion, society, politics and economy was examined through the analysis into Mohist view of righteousness and profit and its ten arguments(十論) based on it. Even before the view of righteousness and profit became a main subject of discussion by all classes of philosophers including Confucius and Mozi, it had been already discussed, and it was generally understood ‘righteousness(義)’ and ‘profit(利)’ as the relation of means and ends(本末) or a principle and its application(體用). The position of Confucianism including Confucius was to inherit this tendency and set it as an individual's moral standard. Of course, Confucian viewpoint was focused on a politician or a leader of those times. On the other hand, Mohism aimed to pursue common interests of a group and the society rather than those of an individual representing the stance of one's own group members. Therefore, while Confucianism regarded ‘righteousness’ as more important than ‘profit’, Mohism could understand both in unity. The decisive reason why Mohism could act most energetically during the Warring States period was that it had its metaphysical base on ‘the will of the heaven'. Along with which, the view of righteousness and profit of Mohism was internally reflected in the key arguments of Mohism including ‘universal love(兼愛)' as it was. It is the so-called ‘loving each other and benefiting each other(兼相愛, 交相利)’, and so to speak, ‘loving each other is the very benefiting each other.’ Mozi's view of righteousness and profit pursued the union of ‘righteousness’ and ‘profit’, and it becomes revealed through ‘loving each other and benefiting each other(兼相愛, 交相利)’ at once. His idea of ‘loving altogether and sharing benefits altogether’ transcending social positions and classes compose ten arguments of Mohism divided into ‘the heaven's will(天志)’, ‘proving the existence of ghosts(明鬼)’ and ‘no music(非樂)’ in terms of religion, ‘universal love’ and ‘no attack(非攻)’ in terms of society, ‘the same with the top(尙同)’ and ‘respect for the wise(尙賢)’ in terms of politics, and ‘frugality(節用)’, ‘frugal funeral(節葬)’ and ‘no music(非樂)’ in terms of economy. Accordingly, ‘ten arguments’ of Mohism has a practical nature to which Mozi's view of righteousness and profit has been reflected in detail.
Mozi argued ‘the will of the heaven(天志)’, ‘proving the existence of ghosts(明鬼)’ and ‘no music’ in terms of religion. The notion of the heaven(天) as a personal god in Yin and Zhou dynasty was developed into the concept of moral heaven of righteousness and profit(義利天) by Confucius and the natural heaven(自然天) with a permanent order by Lao-tzu, so the existing notion of the heaven was declining, but Mozi instead advocated the heaven's will and returned the heaven to the concept of the absolute being. It was because the members of the Mohist group were mostly in the lower class of the society, and religious power was necessary to unite them. Moreover, Mozi associated all his teaching with the will of the heaven, and tried to renovate different ills of the society based on faith in the heaven. In addition, Mozi proved the existence of ghosts using the three-standard method(三表法), and the roles of ghosts were similar to those of the heaven. Mozi wanted to warn the ruling class through the heaven's will and proving the existence of ghosts(明鬼). In this way, while Mozi acknowledged the heaven and ghosts, he rejected and criticized fatalism particularly in 「No Fatalism(非命)」 , which discouraged people from having the desire to produce and justified hereditary status of the aristocratic class. It seems contradictory, but from the purpose of universal love and loving one another transcending classes, they have something in common.
Mozi claimed ‘universal love’ and ‘no attack’ in terms of the society. ‘Loving each other and sharing benefits among people’(兼相愛, 交相利) is a fundamental notion consistent in the whole books of Mozi, and can be said to be a practical ideology that reflects Mozi's view of righteousness and profit. Universal love, the philosophical foundation of Mozi's ten arguments, means loving each other transcending status and classes. Loving each other between different classes without any condition is the fundamental meaning of universal love Mozi said about. It is equal love in other words, and it insisted that if all people would love in this way without dividing by intimacy and high and low, true equality could be realized in a social community. Furthermore, Mozi expanded universal love to the outside of the nation, and argued no attack. As the frequent conquering wars during the Warring States period made lives of people difficult, stopping wars was a desperate task to Mozi. He strongly emphasized the harmful consequences of a war, and even joined a defending war himself in order to stop the war.
Mozi argued ‘the same with the top(尙同)’ and ‘respect for the wise(尙賢)’ in terms of politics. Mozi's same with the top means that all related to good and evil and right and wrong should be determined according to superiors' will, and respect for the wise means that a virtuous and competent man must be hired regardless of high and low of the class from which a person is, but just according to abilities. The same with the top and respect for the wise not only reflected Mozi's complaints about the unreasonable and unequal hierarchical system of clan rules in Zhou dynasty, but also showed Mozi's wish for clean political environment. Mozi believed that the hereditary hierarchical system by the clan rules of those times had created unequal social systems and, as a result, made people suffer from ‘three worries(三患)’, and tried to overthrow the hereditary hierarchical system of intimacy(親親) by the ideology of the same with the top and respect for the wise. Mozi thought that when ‘the same with the top’ and ‘respect for the wise’ became possible, the concepts of ‘rich and poor, high and low’ and ‘intimacy’ would disappear, and people would love one another and share benefits. Mozi's ‘same with the top’ is the process of gathering people's opinions as one and electing a leader, and ‘respect for the wise’ is that the leader elected by people selects a wise and able government officials. Mozi thought that if these two could be realized politically, the ideal society he thought of would be able to be established.
Mozi insisted on ‘frugality(節用)’, ‘frugal funeral(節葬)’ and ‘no music(非樂)’ in terms of economy. In 「Frugality(節用)」 , Mozi suggested his economic view comprehensively. The ideal society Mozi pursued is where goods are abundant inside the social community and all its members can enjoy the richness together. As the two procedures to make a nation rich and powerful, Mozi claimed securing productivity and suppression of extravagance and waste. Among which, he insisted particularly on the restraint of extravagance and waste taking the level of productive technology of those times into consideration. It is the very ‘frugality’ idea of Mozi. Frugality promoted by Mozi mainly targeted at the ruling class. He considered mostly the ruling class's immoderate and excessive consumption as weakened economy of a nation and people's poverty. Mozi argued that the minimum guarantee of people's necessities of life is important, all kinds of extravagance and waste of all consumption need to be removed, and one should be frugal. It is frugal funeral and no music that simplify the procedures of a funeral and liturgical music, save goods and practice frugality.
On the other hand, it became a double-edged sword that the ideological foundation of Mozi's view of righteousness and profit, and furthermore, the ten arguments including universal love was the will of the heaven. That was because while it could be easily accepted by the laborers, farmers and craftsmen composing Mohism at that time from their levels, after feudal nations of Qin and Han were founded, it instead provided the momentum of going into the road to decline. In the feudal nations, the ideology and activities of Mohism as an individual group couldn't be tolerated. For instance, the way to set the heaven(上帝) above ‘the supreme ruler’ might be a crucial restriction to the regime's legitimacy and rationality. In addition, Mozi's argument of frugality, frugal funeral, no music and others couldn't be accepted by the privileged. Therefore, until the gradual shift of the western power to the east(西勢東漸) later in Qing dynasty, Mohism rarely acted as an academic school, which was different from Confucianism. In the history, Mohist ideology, such as universal love, ended up in an utopian idea, but the notions that it shares with Confucianism, such as mutual love, consideration and interest relatively from the stance of socially unprivileged people, are still worthy of appreciation today.
