The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of adolescents' SNS upward comparison on inferiority reactions and to verify the moderating effect of ego-resiliency in this process. Based on Adler’s theory, inferiority reactions were categorized into negative and positive reactions to provide a multidimensional understanding of the impact of the SNS environment on adolescent development.
The research questions are as follows: First, what are the correlations among SNS upward comparison, inferiority reactions (positive/negative), and ego-resiliency? Second, what is the moderating effect of ego-resiliency on the relationship between SNS upward comparison and negative inferiority reactions? Third, what is the moderating effect of ego-resiliency on the relationship between SNS upward comparison and positive inferiority reactions?
To address these questions, an online self-report survey was conducted with middle and high school students (aged 13–19) nationwide. The measurement tools included the SNS Upward Comparison Scale, Inferiority Reaction Scale, and Ego-Resiliency Scale. Data were analyzed using SPSS and the PROCESS macro for descriptive statistics, reliability analysis, Pearson correlation analysis, and moderation analysis. The Johnson-Neyman technique was employed to verify the regions of significance for the moderating effects. Notably, to ensure data consistency and validity, the 'sibling comparison' factor—which could cause structural missing data—was excluded from the Inferiority Reaction Scale, and only the 'comparison with others' factor was used in the final analysis.
The results of the study are as follows: First, correlation analysis revealed that SNS upward comparison showed a significant positive correlation with negative inferiority reactions (comparison with others) but a significant negative correlation with positive inferiority reactions. This implies that as adolescents engage more in SNS upward comparison, negative inferiority reactions increase while positive reactions decrease. Meanwhile, ego-resiliency was negatively correlated with negative inferiority reactions and SNS upward comparison, but positively correlated with positive inferiority reactions.
Second, ego-resiliency significantly moderated the effect of SNS upward comparison on negative inferiority reactions. Specifically, the positive influence of SNS upward comparison on negative reactions was stronger in the group with low ego-resiliency, whereas the effect was relatively milder in the high ego-resiliency group. This indicates that ego-resiliency buffers the pathway through which SNS upward comparison leads to negative emotional experiences.
Third, ego-resiliency also significantly moderated the effect of SNS upward comparison on positive inferiority reactions. The negative influence of SNS upward comparison on positive reactions was strong in the low ego-resiliency group. In contrast, in the high ego-resiliency group, SNS upward comparison did not have a significant detrimental effect on positive inferiority reactions. This suggests that adolescents with high ego-resiliency can stably maintain positive energy for self-improvement despite experiences of comparison with others.
This study is significant in empirically confirming that SNS upward comparison among adolescents primarily triggers negative inferiority reactions. The finding that this negative impact is stronger in adolescents with low ego-resiliency suggests that they are more sensitive to SNS comparison stimuli and more prone to psychological maladjustment. Consequently, this study suggests the necessity of educational and counseling interventions to help adolescents manage SNS-induced comparisons and inferiority healthily and to enhance ego-resiliency to transform these experiences into growth motivation.
