The purpose of this study was to identify general characteristics of idolization of entertainment starts among youths in rural area and to review changes according to variables such as by class, gender, residential type, allowances, academic scores and education level of their fathers.
The subjects of the study were 720 elementary, middle school and high school students lived in Hongseong-gun. The data collected were analyzed by frequency analysis, t-test and one-way ANOVA.
Followings are the results of the study:
Firstly, the triggers of the idolization of entertainment stars among youths were not only their exterior looking but also their talents. In particular, girls put more importance on all the aspects of singers than boys and middle school students put more importance on exterior looking than high school students.
Secondly, the imitation and worship behaviors of youths regarding entertainment stars are very much restricted rather than universal.
Thirdly, although it was unusual that their everyday life was damaged because of idolization of pop stars or their lives became changed because of it, they tend to buy information or materials relating with pop stars.
Fourthly, although there was no difference in the level of idolization according to academic score, students with bad marks put more importance on exterior looking and youths whose father's schooling is under middle school graduation, those who live in detached houses and those who get higher allowances showed higher idolization level.
Fifthly, the level of idolization was higher in females than males. By class, elementary school students showed a lower level than middle school and high school students. However, there was no difference between middle school students and high school students.
Followings are the proposals for subsequent studies:
Firstly, this study was regarding idolization of pop stars among rural area youths. Therefore it is needed to have an extensive comparative study between rural area and city area including other entertainment starts such as movie stars, TV talents, gagmen, models and athletes.
Secondly, it is needed to review the relationship between idolization and the living attitudes and the academic records of the students. Most of youths are students. Therefore it is needed to study what influence the idolization of starts made on the living attitudes and the academic records of the students by comparing before and after the idolization.
