The purpose of this study is to clarify the meaning of educational subjectification in Gert Biesta’s educational theory and to critically examine the contemporary discourse of the learner as subject. Contemporary education has emphasized students’ interests, choices, experiences, and self-directedness, understanding education primarily as a process of learner growth and competency development. While this shift has contributed to a critical reflection on teacher-centered education, it has also reduced education to the language of learning and positioned students as subjects who manage their own learning.
This study first examines how teacher-centered and learner-centered views of education have understood the educational subject. The teacher-centered view understands students as beings formed through teachers’ instruction and the order of school subjects, whereas the learner-centered view understands students as beings who construct themselves through their own experiences and choices. In contrast, Biesta’s notion of educational subjectification shows that the educational subject emerges through an encounter with the world and through a response to the questions that the world addresses to the student.
This study then analyzes Biesta’s notion of subjectification in relation to the thought of Hannah Arendt and Emmanuel Levinas. Arendt’s concepts of action, plurality, and natality show that the subject appears as a being who begins something new in a plural world. Levinas’s concepts of responsibility, response, and irreplaceability reveal that the subject is called to respond before the other. Biesta educationally reconstructs these insights and presents subjectification as a process in which students reconsider their desires and judgments before the world and the other.
Finally, this study explores the implications of educational subjectification for schooling. School is understood as a public space in which students encounter knowledge, traditions, others, and a common world that precedes them. Teachers bear the educational responsibility of presenting the world to students, and school subjects function as mediators through which students encounter the common world. Thus, the central task of schooling is to invite students to ask what kind of being they will become in the world.
In conclusion, educational subjectification is an educational event through which students appear as subjects who respond before the world and the other. This perspective enables a critical reconsideration of self-directedness and competency in learner-centered educational discourse and reopens the meaning of education through the relationship among teaching, learning, and the world.
