This paper presents a study on the influence of teacher feedback to student correction in Korean as a foreign language (KFL) writing instruction. In the process-oriented writing instruction, the role of the teacher is also one of facilitator and responder. This role of the writing teacher has been the inspiration for providing feedback to students. Through the feedback, students improve their paper by correcting their own errors on revised papers. Therefore, in this study, examined teacher feedback on student papers and revised drafts of each paper were observed in order to determine the influence of the first-draft feedback on the students' revisions and assess whether the changes made in response to the teacher's feedback actually improved the papers. The results suggest an insight as to what kind of teacher feedback led to substantive student correction and a way to help students use teacher feedback successfully.
The first chapter focuses on the purpose of this study, which is to present the characteristics of teacher feedback that appear to influence student correction and whether revisions influenced by teacher feedback led to substantive and effective changes in students' papers.
The second chapter reviews process- oriented writing instruction, teacher feedback, and student correction from previous researches.
The experimental method and procedures employed in this study are described in the third chapter. The subjects were 51 intermediate-level KFL students at three language institutes. They were required to write a minimum of two drafts for the task. The students' first drafts contained handwritten feedback provided by the teacher. The students then wrote a second draft after receiving teacher feedback. The first drafts and second drafts were collected and analyzed.
An analysis of the influence of teacher feedback to student correction is contained in the fourth chapter. Student response was influenced more by intent or type of teacher feedback rather than by form of teacher feedback, such as length. Grammar and request feedback appeared to lead to the most substantive revisions, whereas positive feedback almost never led to any changes at all. Text-specific feedback was associated with major changes more so than general feedback, but the presence or absence of hedges had little effect on the degree to which changes were made. When changes were made, whether they were minimal or substantial, they overwhelmingly tended to improve the students' papers.
Conclusions and implications for KFL writing instruction based on this study are described in the fifth chapter. Suggestions are made to help students use teacher feedback more successfully and to make feedback more effective. I also suggest simultaneousness of form-based feedback and content-based feedback, taking into consideration student level, then providing text-specific feedback for more effective student corrections.
In the last chapter a brief summarization of the results of this study is made and some suggestions are offered to overcome the problems identified in this study.
