In this study, the general charcteristic features of the Korean crafts and earthenwaers were examined. The critical analysis of the proportions, the symmetries, and the related literatures were also introduced. Sampled earthenwares and crafts were individually measured and their characteristic features were recored. The final drawings were based on the data collected as described above.
The earthenwares and crafts in this study were everyday utensils, ceremonial vessels, and those of the mortuary uses of the Silla and Baegje periods. The study results showed that the static-dynamic symmetries and the ratio of the two sides of the rectangles established for the analysis of shapees and details were found to be 1 to the squareroots of 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, and 3:4, 3:5 (almost equal to the Golden Ratio). The comparative analysis of the earthenwares and crafts of the neolithic and broze ages and the metal wares of the Silla period were also resulted with similar proportional features.
The possible use of the proportional scales influenced by the mathematical applications of the old Korean. architecture could have existed; however, the craftman' sinstinct sense of proportion, scale, balance, rhythm, and skilled experiences seemed to have brought such results along with highly sophisticated and selective customer's taste.
