This study was carried out to seek for an influence degree of a marital intimacy perceived by over 40 middle- aged man on his life satisfaction and role performance as a father, and for an additional purpose to compare a perception degree of the middle aged man and that of his family.
Over 40 middle aged married man with offspring more than one, living in Seoul and Gyeonggi area were selected as the subjects of the study, and finally, the data from 226 middle aged men and 47 families were used. Likert scale based self-report questionnaire was used as the data collecting method, the questionnaire was made separately for general one for married men and for families. 6 versions of questionnaires were made with cross equalization conducted as a way to control the order effect in answering with questionnaire constitution. Frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, correlation coefficient, multiple regression analysis were used with SPSS 12.0 program dor the selected data, and Cronbach's Alpha was used for reliability estimation by scale.
The results of the study was summarized as below.
First, the results of the effect of marital intimacy perceived by middle- aged man on each sub area of his life satisfaction, significant emotional, sexual intimacies were predicted in every variables. in cognitive intimacy, there appeared no significant prediction in every area.
Second, the results of an influence of the marital intimacy level perceived by middle aged men on each sub area of the role performance as the fathers, showed recognitive intimacy as a significant prediction level in every variables. In sexual intimacy, no area was appeared that had considerable prediction.
Third, the results of the comparison between the marital intimacy, life satisfaction, role performance as a father perceived by middle aged men and the perception level of their wives about marital intimacy, that of their offsprings about the role performance as their fathers, appeared that the perception of the middle aged men was higher than that of their families.
From the integrated results, it was clear that the married couples' level was higher in mutual emotional intimacy and in recognition of sex as an uninhibited matter, their life satisfaction also were higher, and when the married couples were recognized as a independent being with their own personality, the father-role performance were carried out actively.
Besides, there existed a difference in recognition between the middle aged men and their families, which indicates a necessity of approach under the consideration of interaction aspect in family related education and in counseling scene to reduce the difference between a perception and reality.
