The Effects of Formative Activities through Nature Walks on Young Children's Social Competence and Emotional Intelligence

The purpose of this study is to show the effects of formative activities through nature walks which share young children with group of that age on young children's social competence and emotional intelligence.
For the purpose, following research questions were established.
1. How dose formative activities through nature walks affect young children's social competence?
2. How dose formative activities through nature walks affect young children's emotional intelligence?
It was carried out with 32 five-year-old children in two kindergartens in I city. The study set an experimental group for those who have formative activities through nature walks, comparative group with only life subjects. To identity the effects on the social competence and emotional intelligence of children, a pre-test and a post-test with a Social Competence Test and Emotional Intelligence Test were conducted. The collect data were analyzed by t-test using SPSS(win for ver. 12.0) program.
The experimental procedure was in the order of: (a) a preliminary study, (b) training of test administrators, (c) a pre-test, (d) experimental treatment, and (e) a post-test. Formative activities through nature walks were conducted two times per week for 9 weeks. To identify the average differences among the two groups, the means and standard deviations were calculated and then a t-test was carried out.
The results of study are as follows;
First, significant difference of young children's social competence were found between experimental group treated with formative activities through nature walks and comparative group. formative activities through nature walks made improvement in social skill(interpersonal skill, communicative skill, cooperative skill).
Second, significant difference of young children's emotional intelligence were found between experimental group treated with formative activities through nature walks and comparative group. formative activities through nature walks made improvement in emotional intelligence(self-regulation ability et al.)
