인지욕구와 읽기처리에 관련된 인지능력 및 읽기수행과의 관계

The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between the Need for Cognition (NFC), an individual’s tendency towards pursuing cognitive challenges and engaging in effortful cognitive activities, and reading performance and reading-related cognitive abilities. Participants were 42 undergraduate students who completed an NFC survey and a reading span task, and also read sets of sentences for comprehension and memory. Correlational analyses showed that the participants’ NFC scores were positively associated with the reading span scores; moreover, the correlation between NFC and sentence memory (considered a more effortful cognitive task than reading comprehension) was found to be significant. No correlation was found between NFC and sentence comprehension, however. Thus, the study results revealed that the higher the NFC, the larger the reading span and the higher the sentence memory. Moreover, after controlling for reading times, NFC was shown to significantly predict sentence memory in regression analysis. These results suggest that NFC should be considered as an individual difference variable for predicting reading performance.
