The purpose of this study was to develop child-friendly planning guidelines for spatial environments in a bid to improve children's lives and step up their development in their residential community. Studies of children's environments were reviewed to select child-friendly planning guidelines for spatial environments. Also, children's parents and child-care experts were investigated by applying a small group workshop panel method to make up for the selected planning guidelines in view of children's real life. A quantitative survey was implemented to evaluate the importance of the planning guidelines to finalize them. After studies of residential environments, outdoor play environments and child-care environments were scrutinized, selection criteria were prepared, and 200 planning guidelines were selected according to the criteria. When the parents and child-care experts were investigated by the small group workshop, they had a full discussion on children's lives, and additional planning guidelines were selected in light of their lives. They were asked to evaluate the primary planning guidelines for spatial environments. And then 119 planning guidelines were selected in accordance with the results of the importance evaluation by the studies and workshop, which were categorized into three: residential environments, outdoor place environments and neighborhood environments. The planning guidelines were incorporated again into 76 guidelines based on the survey, and the importance of the finalized guidelines was evaluated. The major findings of the study were as follows: First, as a result of checking children's major activities and places of action, the sphere of their activities was far-reaching from residential environments to neighborhood environments. They were active in various spaces at their houses in addition to their own rooms, and they felt inconveniences when they used the facilities and spaces. Outside their houses, external environments including vehicles posed a threat to their safety and health. Second, 76 significant planning guidelines for spatial environments were developed according to the results of document analysis, small group workshop, and survey. The guidelines covered residential environments, outdoor play environments, and neighborhood environments with 25, 28, and 23 items respectively. When the parents were asked to assess the importance of the planning guidelines, every guideline was rated as 'important' or 'very important'. As a result of comparing the importance of the three categories, the guidelines for neighborhood environments were considered most important, which showed that children were exposed to a lot of dangers in neighborhood environments. And it also implied that there was the urgent necessity to improve facilities and environments. Third, as for the importance of the guidelines in each field, the kinds of furniture, equipment, and materials that could prevent any possible electric accidents or sliding should be selected in the field of residential environments. The parents especially attached importance to elevator monitoring. In outdoor play spaces, the kinds of play equipment that could lesson the risk of accidents should be installed, and adults who accompany playing children should stay careful all the time. In neighborhood environments, the sorts of facilities and equipment that could prevent fire, electric accidents, sliding or fall should be prepared in a manner to make it easier for adults to keep an eye on their children. Forth, the importance of the planning guidelines for spatial environments was different according to child age. For preschoolers, the facilities and equipment should be suitable for their body size and guarantee their safety. In the event of school children, it was required to create a good learning climate as they just started to receive education. Also, facilities of sports and keeping sporting supplies should be prepared for them to enjoy various kinds of exercise. This study that attempted to develop child-friendly planning guidelines for spatial environments and assess the importance of the planning guidelines had the following significance: First, children were increasingly considered important in today's society, and the residential community environments were discussed from their perspective by viewing them as the major user of environments. And the scope of the study was extended to their residential community by looking into neighborhood environments on which existing studies hadn't focused. Second, multi-mode research methods were applied to develop extensive planning guidelines with the help of parents and experts, since it was not easy to survey children who couldn't yet express themselves well. Third, applicable planning guidelines were presented, and a quantitative survey was conducted to verify the guidelines to improve their applicability to residential community planning geared toward children.
