The purposes of this study are to examine how leadership type of department head teachers and job satisfaction degrees of teachers were recognized according to teachers' individual backgrounds and schools' backgrounds, to clarify the relationship between department head teachers' leadership type and teachers' job satisfaction degrees, and to maximize the school-management efficiency.
Under those aims, this study conducted both documentary study and field investigation concerning the leadership and job satisfaction degrees of department head teachers. In the field investigation, for the purpose of examining the characters of department head teachers' leadership as teachers recognize, the factors found from the leaders' behavioral technique questionnaire made by A. W. Halpin and the department head teachers' appraisal questionnaire developed by Thoms J. Sergiovanni were referred and quoted in Kim, Chun Wha's questionnaire, again, Kim, Chun Wha's was modified and supplemented for this study. As for the measurement of teachers' job satisfaction degrees, this study applied No, Jong Hee's Teacher Job Satisfaction Questionnaire(TJSQ).
The subordinate factors in the department-head teachers' leadership questionnaire were task-centered factor and human relationship or harmonious relationship factor, and these 2 factors included 20 questions in total. The questionnaire examining teachers' job satisfaction degrees had 7 lower-rank factors such as compensation, possibility of future growth, renovation, autonomy, task charges, companionship, and teaching profession-ship, and these factors included 28 questions in total.
The questionnaire copies were distributed to 320 teachers who work at 32 middle․high schools located at KyeongKi-Do KuRi, NamYangJu, and EuiJeongBu City. 320 copies were collected, and 318 copies were treated by the statistical analysis, except for 2 copies that were not replied properly.
The statistical analysis used here was SPSSWIN 10.0 program. In grading the results of the questionnaire survey, Likert's 5-stepped scale was adopted; 1 point is given to "absolutely no", 2 points, "almost no", 3 points, "average", 4 points, "yes", 5 points, "absolutely yes". T-test and Analysis of variance(ANOVA) were applied to verify the differences among the lower rank factors toward department head teachers' job satisfaction degrees and leadership type according to teachers' factors such as gender, age, job-career, school scale, and school-level.
The final results obtained from the basis of those studies are as follows;
First, as for the department head teachers' leadership as teachers recognize, the groups that showed a higher level of leadership were the female gender-group, the 40s age-group, 10-25 and below years' job career group, 25-35 and blow classrooms' school scale-group, and middle school group.
Second, the average point of teachers' job satisfaction degrees was 3.20, a higher point than usual. The right order arranged by satisfaction degrees was as follows; companionship, teaching profession-ship, autonomy, possibility of future growth, renovation-ship, compensation, task charges. The satisfaction degrees of compensation and task charges were lower than those of companionship and teaching profession-ship.
Third, it was proved that the schools directed by department head teachers who show efficient leadership type also show a high level of autonomy. The schools directed by department head teachers who show human relationship-centered leadership type also show a high level of companionship. The schools directed by department head teachers who show efficient leadership type and human relationship-centered leadership type also show a high level of teaching profession-ship.
Summing up the above analysis, the relationship between department head teachers' leadership type and teachers' job satisfaction degrees proved to be very statically interrelated with each other. Therefore, in order to cope with today's educational circumstances in which department head teachers' leadership type is emphasized more and more, department head teachers should have more training and study programs, more studied should be conducted in developing department head teachers' leadership, prior to the studies on principals' leadership.
