The purpose of this study was to explore young children's informal division ability and strategy by division situation and to investigate the differences in ability and strategy according to situation of division (partitive vs. quotative) and children's ages.
The following questions were used in the research:
1. Is young children's informal division problem solution ability differ according to age?
2. How about informal division problem solution of young children?
2-1. Is informal division problem solution of young children differ according to division problem situation?
2-2. Is informal division problem solution of young children differ according to division problem level?
3. How about informal division strategy of young children?
3-1. Is informal division strategy of young children differ according to division problem situation?
3-2. Is informal division strategy of young children differ according to division problem level?
The subject of this study was 146 3-, 4-, and 5-year-old children who attend to kindergarten and child care centers in Seoul. The materials for interview consists of a set of division tasks which include two situation of division, partitive and quotative. The whole process of each interview was videotaped and transcribed.
The results of this study were as follows;
1. Young children showed the different abilities of solving informal division problems according to ages.
2. Young children showed the different of solving informal division problems according to division situation and problem level. They did better in partitive context than in qoutative context, because they frequently experience sharing in real life situation.
3. Young children showed the different of informal division strategy according to division situation and problem level. Children's strategies for solving division problems got varied with increasing ages.
