This study was aimed to examine the relationship between parent attachment and anxiety and the mediating effects of self-encouragement.
The subjects were 406(male:210, female:196) students of 6th grade Elementary School in Yangsan. The instruments of the study were the IPPA-R, Self-encouragement and RCMAS. For the statistical analysis SPSS and AMOS programs were used and Pearson's correlation and structural equation modeling were conducted.
The results of this study were as follows:
First, parent attachment and self-encouragement show statistically significant positive correlation, and theses two variables had negative correlations against anxiety. Second, the correlation coefficient among the three variables for the female group were statistically significant, but for the male group correlation coefficient between anxiety and self-encouragement was not significant. Third, self-encouragement partially mediated between parent attachment and anxiety. Fourth, self-encouragement mediated between parent attachment and anxiety for the female group, but there was no mediated effect for the male group.
Based on these results, it is confirmed that the self-encouragement may play a role in buffering for the effect on anxiety with parent attachment and there are differences according to the gender.
