가정에서 유아의 스마트 기기 사용에 관한 탐색 연구 = An Exploratory Study on Early Childhood Smart Device Usage at Home

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구의 목적은 가정에서 유아들이 스마트 기기를 어떻게 사용하는지 탐색하고, 가정에서 유아들이 사용하는 스마트기기의 특성을 조사하는데 있다. 본 연구의 자료는 비디오 관찰과 면담을 통하여 수집하였다. 본 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 연구 참여 유아들의 스마트 기기 사용 패턴은 게임, 교육용 앱, 동영상 시청 등을 중심으로 이루어지고, 부모가 사용에 대한 통제역할을 하고 있었다. 둘째, 연구 참여 유아들이 스마트 기기를 가정에서 사용할 때, 또래 보다는 부모와 상호작용이 더 활발하였다. 그러나 유아들은 스마트 기기를 기본적으로 개인적인 공간과 매체로 사용하고 있었다. 셋째, 연구 참여 부모들은 가정에서 유아들의 스마트 기기 과몰입에 대하여 주의를 하고 있었다. 넷째, 연구 참여 유아들이 사용한 어플리케이션은 짧은 주의집중 주기를 가지고 있는 유아들의 특성과 유사한 면이 있었다. 마지막으로, 연구 참여 유아들이 스마트 기기를 사용하는데 사용자 인터페이스와 기기 디자인이 중요한 역할을 하였다. 본 연구의 자료는 유아들과 부모들이 현대적인 미디어 매체인 스마트 기기를 적절하게 활용하는데 도움을 줄 수 있으리라 기대된다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this study was to investigate how children actually use smart devices at home, and the characteristics of smart devices they use. We used video observation and parent interviews to study children’s smart device use. The results are as follows. First, the children mostly used game apps or educational apps, and their parents played the role of “gate keeper” when selecting and guiding children’s activities. Second, when using smart devices, the children’s verbal interaction showed different patterns. The children initiated verbal interaction with their parents as they were using smart devices, but verbal interaction between peers was at a minimum level. Third, the parents were cautious about the possible smart device overuse. Fourth, the children’s short attention span and the characteristics of smart device apps enabled the children to get involved in the activity easily. Lastly, the children were able to use the basic interface of touch, touch and drag, and home button easily. Also, the size and the weight of smart devices, which matches their body size, enabled them to use the device for longer hours. This study helped us understand the issues of young children and smart devices at home. These findings could contribute to the debate of the use of smart devices in early childhood.
