As stress levels among individuals in Korean society have recently risen, leading to an increase in mental health issues, stress-related
problems in the field of dance are also receiving significant attention. However, while existing research on stress in dance has primarily focused on fine arts dance, studies on stress related to practical dance remain relatively scarce.
In particular, practical dance is exposed to a unique stress environment distinct from that of fine arts dance, necessitating further exploration. Furthermore, even within the same environment, individuals may perceive, evaluate, and respond to stress differently; therefore, this study
adopts an approach centered on the concept of perceived stress.
To this end, we explored the structure of these experiences using Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topic modeling—to minimize researcher
bias—based on data collected through in-depth interviews with 10 participants. The derived topics were then refined through the
researcher’s qualitative interpretation, and we sought to ensure the validity and reliability of this study through a mixed-methods approach.
Accordingly, the final conclusions are as follows. Topic 1 is “Experiences of alienation and exclusion within support structures”; Topic 2 is
“Conflict regarding the direction of activities”; Topic 3 is “Economic difficulties due to delayed pay and professional values”; Topic 4 is “Physical fatigue and psychological burnout in the practice environment”; Topic 5 is “Pressure to post on social media and feelings of comparison”;
Topic 6 was named “Negative Emotions in Relationships” and Topic 7 was named “Lack of Recognition Due to Lack of Public Recognition.”
These results indicate that the stress experiences of practical dancers are not merely individual issues but are complexly shaped within
various structural contexts, such as support systems, activity environments, economic instability, social media exposure, relational structures, and opportunity formation centered on public recognition.
Accordingly, this study is significant in that it explores the thematic structure of perceived stress experienced by practical dancers in their actual artistic practice settings. It is expected to expand knowledge regarding the psychological mechanisms and response patterns of practical dancers, shed new light on mental health issues to contribute to the well-being of artists and the enhancement of individual capabilities, and further contribute to subsequent psychological research and policy discussions in the performing arts field.
