The purpose of this study is to analyze the differences of characteristics of problems children made and characteristics of strategies children used in problem posing according to math learning capabilities of elementary school children, and to find out some suggestions for better math education. The subjects in this study were 12 selected elementary schoolers. Out of them, six children were good at math, and the math grades of the other six students were at an intermediate level. They were asked to pose math problems without any prior guidance, and the problems they made weren't discussed or solved, either. To track the characteristics of strategies both groups utilized, two students each were selected from the groups, and one-on-one interview was conducted using structured questionnaires. And the features of their problems were analyzed in consideration of the perfectness, type and complexity of the problems they made and of connections between the strategies and the problems. The features of their strategies were analyzed in consideration of general problem-posing strategy and what-if-not strategy.
According to math learning capabilities of elementary school children, there were local differences not global differences in characteristics of problems children made. First, in consideration of the perfectness, high level children's problems were more perfect than those of middle level children's problems, for high level children knew the elements of problems better than middle level children. High level children's looking back to check the perfectness of their problems was also one of reasons for high perfectness. Second, in consideration of the type, there were no significant differences between high and middle level children's problems. But high level children posed more nonroutine problems than middle level children. Because middle level children were not familar to nonroutine problems and had lower knowledge on given material than high level children. Third, in consideration of the reality, there were no significant differences between high and middle level children's problems. Fourth, in consideration of the number of words, high level children used more numbers than middle level children in stating problems. Because middle level children were not better in offering problem situation concretely and richly using their resources, and finding out mathematical factors in real life and making them as mathematical problems than high level children. Fifth, high level children posed more complex operation problems than middle level children, but there were no significant differences. Sixth, complex operation problems both high and middle level children posed were 46%. But there were no significant differences. Because children focused on problem situations rather than focusing operations and doing developmental thinking. Seventh, high level children posed more problems related on given material than middle level children. Because high level children understood the structures of problems better than middle level children. Eighth, in relation to given problem situations, there were no significant differences between high middle level children. Because given material were familar to children, they posed related problems to given material. According to math learning capabilities of elementary school children, there were not global differences in characteristics of strategies high and middle level children used. But there were local differences in perfect use of strategies. First, in material [1], high level children used strategies 1, 2 perfectly, but middle level children did not. In that both high and middle level children used same strategies or did not used same strategies, there were not global differences. But there were local differences in perfect use of strategies and using other alternative strategies. Second, in material [2], high level children used strategies 1, 5. But only one high level children used them perfectly, other children did not. It relied on children's level of capabilities in mathematics. Third, in material [3], there were no significant differences between both high and middle level children.
