Presenting things to young children with developmental delay is very critical in that they can improve their cognitive abilities through getting used to things and their unique colors. Specifically, art activities that could be used to step up the growth of those children's color cognition are one of the best media to accelerate their overall physical, emotional and cognitive development and their social skills as well.
It is attempted in this study to apply art activities to young children with developmental delay, who had difficulties with cognitive development, to see how their use of colors and color discrimination improved. The purpose of this study was to examine the preferred colors of young children with developmental delay, the characteristics of their color expression and their awareness of the names of colors by having them engaged in art activities.
The subjects in this study were preschoolers with developmental delay who were selected with K-DIAL3. An art program was conducted in 20 sessions for approximately three months, once or twice a week, 30 or 40 minutes each, and a journal was drawn up by making a participatory observation. To identify the features of their color cognition process, they were asked to recall the names of colors and things in the middle of diverse art activities, and their memory was checked.
The findings of the study were as below:
First, the young children with developmental delay used their preferred colors. They had a fondness for certain colors they already knew, and at the same time, they knew the colors because they preferred them.
Second, the features of their color expression were displayed in diverse manner. They made the same progress as ordinary preschoolers in color- based symbolization, classification, reaction, association, knowledge and relationship with things.
Third, as for their awareness of the names of colors, the young children with developmental delay called different colors in their own way first, and then they were getting able to match colors with the correct names appropriately.
When one's color cognition make strides, it means that he or she can understand the exact meaning of things and influence for building amicable relationship with others. This suggests that young children with developmental delay could naturally be socialized when their color cognition improves.
The effort by this study is expected to spark other researches effort to explore what differences the use of colors make to cognitive developmental process and how correlation among different areas of development affects sociability and language development
