This study aimed to examine the level of teaching competencies for AI-convergence education among secondary music teachers and to investigate the status of AI-integrated music classes in actual school settings. To this end, a survey was conducted with 188 secondary music teachers nationwide, and the collected responses were analyzed.
First, the overall level of teaching competencies for AI-convergence education was above average (M = 3.61), while relatively large differences were observed among teachers. Teachers showed higher levels of competency in instructional reflection and improvement, as well as curriculum and lesson reconstruction, whereas their understanding of AI-convergence education and their ability to create AI-based learning environments were relatively low. In addition, significant differences in teaching competencies were found according to teachers’ academic background, teacher certification institutions, and school location, mainly in instructional reflection and improvement competencies.
Second, regarding the status of AI-integrated music classes, more teachers reported having no teaching experience (54.8%) than those with experience (45.2%). This indicates that AI-integrated music instruction has not yet been sufficiently disseminated across school settings.
Third, regardless of teaching experience, teachers identified a lack of knowledge about AI tools, insufficient preparation time, and a shortage of instructional materials as major difficulties. Teachers without experience mainly perceived difficulties in understanding AI tools, while those with experience reported challenges related to lesson implementation and instructional design.
Fourth, AI-integrated music classes were most frequently conducted in the area of music creation (76.5%), while applications in listening and performance were relatively limited. The AI tools most commonly used by teachers were content-generation-based tools, indicating that AI-integrated music classes tended to be concentrated on creative activities.
Fifth, the teaching and learning strategies most frequently utilized by teachers in AI-integrated music classes were the use of AI tools in the introduction of class and the encouragement of student-led practical activities. Furthermore, teachers' perceptions of the educational value of AI-integrated classes were highest in expanding musical experiences and enhancing creative thinking and musical expression through AI. However, the perceived improvement in learning comprehension through AI-based personalized instruction was lower.
Overall, teachers who had experience with AI-integrated music classes or intended to continue such classes tended to show higher levels of teaching competencies for AI-convergence education. However, the interpretation of the relationship between teaching competencies and classroom practices is limited, as these variables were measured using different types of data.
Based on these findings, the following suggestions are proposed.
First, practical professional development programs and instructional support systems should be established, focusing on the use of AI tools applicable to the music curriculum and on instructional cases grounded in actual classroom practice for implementing AI-integrated music classes.
Second, to prevent AI-integrated music classes from being overly concentrated in the area of music creation, AI tools and instructional materials that can be applied to listening and performance should be continuously developed.
Third, collaborative environments should be fostered to expand teachers’ experiences with AI-integrated instruction, enabling music teachers to share instructional practices and engage in joint inquiry with their colleagues.
Based on this study, it is expected that continuous policy-level and practical support for AI-convergence music education will contribute to the stable implementation of AI-integrated music classes in school settings.
