Not all product attributes are equally important in determining consumer preferences. However, it has been pointed out that some attribute clearly more important than other in determining purchasing behavior.
Those attributes projected by the product's image which lead to the choice of that product may be called determinant, Since they determine preference and purchase behavior.
This paper will discuss determinant attributes, their meaning and relevance to marketing strategy. In planning this research method, a buyer's perceived product attributes were measured to the domestically manufactured recreational vehicle. A buyer's determinance was then analysed into two levels.
First, what effects does a certain recreational vehicles have on a buyer's determinance?
Second, do income and age carry any significant influences in a buyer's determinance?
The importance and the different levels of product differentiation was defined by implementing the dual direct question method : (1) how important each is thought to be in determining choice, and (2) how much difference is perceived among competing products in term of each attributes. Attributes judged high in combined importance and differences are selected as determinant.
The empirical data was collected from the questionaries and the analysis of collected data used were : Kendall, discriminant analysis and one-way ANOVA.
The results of this research may be summarized as :
1) on the whole, the consumer product attributes which they considered important did not differ. contrariwise, the discriminant attributes in purchasing groups of 4WD, Wagon, Minivan proved to be significant different.
2) Determinant attribute was found to be different among the categories of 4WD, Wagon, Minivan
3) Age and income also demonstrated differences in discriminant attribute.
The determinant attribute information provided by this paper may served as a guide in implementing an effective market segmentation, differentiation strategy and marketing mix policies.
