결혼이민여성의 임파워먼트과정에 관한 연구 = A Study on The Empowerment Process of Immigrant Women

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The participants for this study were 12 immigrant women who have been married to Korean men for more than 3 years. This study employed the grounded theory method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews. Data analysis generated 136 concepts, 27 sub categories, and 14 categories. In the axil coding, a paradigm model was proposed as follows: The central phenomenon of the empowerment process of immigrant women was that of ‘Overcoming the Limits’. The causal conditions were ‘Unprepared for Marriage’, and ‘Perceiving the Problems’. The contextual conditions were ‘Active Personality’, ‘Child Giving Power’, and ‘Frustration’. The intervening conditions were ‘Effort by Oneself’, ‘Accepting Support’. The action/interaction strategies were ‘Living our Dream’, and ‘Maintaining a Positive Outlook’. The consequences were ‘Pride’, ‘Living as a Korean’ and ‘Expectations of a Multicultural Society’. In selective coding, the core category was ‘To Live Independently by Overcoming my Limits as a Immigrant Women’. Based on the core category, three types and four stages of the empowerment process of the immigrant women were discerned. These three se were the ‘Actively Achieving Type’, ‘Moderately Trying Type’, and the ‘Sincerely Living Type’. The four stages were the ‘Confused Stage’, the ‘Trying Stage’, the ‘Stable Stage’, and the ‘Exhibiting Stage’. The empowerment process of these Immigrant women resulted in greater promise in the future, higher levels of achievement, satisfaction and adaptation to life in Korea, and dreams of grater self development and adventure. This study has reinforced the need for a synthetic and differentiated approach according to an individual's characteristics. In conclusion, these results have increased our collective understanding and knowledge about the empowerment process of immigrant women, as well as elucidating a number of implications for social work services and theories about immigrant women.
