As a method to minimize the information quantity suggested by teacher and also to improve students' historical thinking skills, the author paid attention to image. As image visually materializes the historical understanding, it should be applied to history lesson. Especially, the topic like the ancient tomb mural paintings of Goguryeo is almost impossible to be understood without using image. Nevertheless, there are only four theses on the ancient tomb mural paintings using image for history lesson, focusing on presenting/explaining images targeting elementary school students.
Thus, this study aimed to conduct the image analysis activity and also to examine the results, focusing on the ancient tomb mural paintings of Goguryeo as measures to apply images to high school history lesson.
Targeting students(Grade1) of five classes of OO High School in Dobong-gu in Seoul-si, the pre-survey was conducted to understand their overall thinking about history. In the full-scale research, examining the historical meanings of the ancient tomb mural paintings of Goguryeo, the current status of the ancient tomb mural paintings of Goguryeo in eight types of high school Korean history textbooks was understood. Next, it analyzed students' responses to Ssangyeongchong Geomahaengryeoldo selected as a topic for the image analysis activity. Lastly, based on the results of analyzing responses, it conducted the teaching-learning activity about the ‘significance and value of the ancient tomb mural paintings of Goguryeo', and then the post-survey was performed.
The results of this study are like below.
First, the image analysis activity showed the educational significance to understand the ancient tomb mural paintings of Goguryeo, and the history of Goguryeo. Through the image analysis activity, students were able to materialize the historical understanding based on the in-depth understanding of the ancient tomb mural paintings and the history of Goguryeo.
Second, when applying the image analysis activity to history lesson, providing images with less information quantity stimulated students' thinking skills and imagination by increasing their concentration on images. In the results of analyzing their responses, compared to the group analyzing the whole images, the group analyzing a single topic submitted more responses and even more logical and creative responses.
Third, the image analysis activity made students self-directedly participate in history lesson. As the image analysis activity was a new activity that has not been experienced by most of the students, and the lesson itself was based on students' responses, students had more interest in participating in lesson. As it was not aiming for memorizing knowledge, students were able to have diverse and intensified thinking by themselves.
In summary, the significance of this study is that the lesson of the ancient tomb mural paintings of Goguryeo through the image analysis activity makes students self-directedly participate in history lesson, and also have clear historical images of the ancient tomb mural paintings of Goguryeo and the history of Goguryeo by developing inquiry skills and imagination.
