This study is a report on the result of physical scoliosis checkups of the fifth graders in elementary schools in South Chungcheong provinces from 2003 to 2005. Planned Population Federation of Korea's branch office in Daejeon City, South Chungcheong province conducted the checkups.
The office conducted the checkups by visiting the students. First, the office conducted a general survey to determine the students' places of residence gender, age, height and weight. Then, the office conducted the Moire checkup to measure the contour map of the shoulders, the angle of the shoulders, height of the shoulders, the length of the armpit, the length of the waist, the length of the pelvis, the ratio between the thoracic vertebrae and the pelvis and the difference between the thoracic vertebrae and the pelvis. Then the checkup judged the difference between the left and right of the shoulder contour map, the difference between left and right shoulders, the difference between the height of the left and right shoulders, the difference between the lengths of the armpits, the difference between the lengths of the pelvis, the ratio between the thoracic vertebrae and the pelvis, the difference between the thoracic vertebrae and the pelvis and the degree of slant in the side body curve. As a result of the checkups, the students were divided into three categories normal, normal B and a group that needed a second checkup.
This study found 2,140out of a total of 50,944 students (4.2%) had scoliosis. This means that one student out of a class has symptoms of scoliosis. When discovered early, scoliosis can be stopped from developing into a serious problem and the possibility of healing is great. However, when the patient is left untreated, the patient will suffer fatigue more frequently, leading to a reduction in labor capacity. On top of this, the patient will start suffer back pain at about 20 years of age. When you have an extreme back pain, you have difficulty in every day life. Especially, a severe back pain at a young age would be a big problem in a married life. The patient then will end up living as a disabled person, unable to who cannot live without medical appliances and with physical and psychological difficulties. Although it is very important to find the symptoms of scoliosis early and to treat it, scoliosis is often found later in life because it does not bring abut pain. Additionally, there is lack of understanding and teenagers do not want to show their bodies to their parents. When a patient goes to the hospital after finding the symptoms on the outside of their bodies, scoliosis is already quite advanced. In such cases, it takes a long time to heal and the body is often unable to heal. This is why group checkups are needed early in life. There is also a need to find those who need treatment early, to give them a chance to heal and continue to monitor the shape of their bodies. Those treated for scoliosis should also have regular checkups. Additionally, it is important to have prevention programs. In order to reduce the high rate of scoliosis, correct posture is needed. Students should also have regular exercise to prevent scoliosis. Education and publicity programs are additionally needed to publicize the treat of scoliosis.
