Participants of the gifted education will become leaders in each area of the future society, and the future leaders need to possess appropriate personalities. This study attempts to examine the impacts of the “personality education program for the gifted” on the creative personality and leadership of gifted middle school student.
For this, previous studies on the characteristics of personality education for the gifted, creative personality and leadership were examined. I revised and used the gifted-student personality education program that was developed by Gyeong-hwa Lee et al.(2013) according to the purpose of this study. The creative personal text tool developed by Joohyun Ha et al.(2011) and the leadership measuring tool developed by Misook Kim (2006) were used as test tools in this study.
The subject of study was 38 gifted middle school students, designed as a one-group experiment. After a pre-test on creative personality and leadership was conducted, classes were carried out as the personality education program for the gifted students and then, a post-test was conducted. The study results of classes that were conducted twelve times for six weeks are as follows.
First, it was shown that the personality education program for the gifted students had a positive effect on creative personality. While the personality education program of this study focused on the growth of character virtues, it was an effect caused by the program’s attempt to grow integrated intelligence and creative problem solving ability.
Second, the personality educational program for the gifted had a positive effect on the growth of gifted middle school students. It was an effect based on the situation that the program supported students to creatively resolve diverse social issues and complicated future problems and played a role of leader to mediate opinions and study through team cooperation, while the personality education program used in this study dealt with the gifted students’ personality in depth.
Third, the personality education program for the gifted equally showed effect on the growth of creative personality and leadership regardless of learners’ personal background such as gender, gifted area and school year.
This study stated that the personality education program for the gifted can be useful to the creativity and personality education for gifted middle school students, and creative personality and leadership can be changed by classes.
Based on the process and results of this study, the followings are suggested for the future studies.
First, creative personality and leadership do not get earned from short-term learning, so such study should be carried out in a long term to examine whether the effects are shown when opportunities to receive personality education are sufficiently provided.
Second, personality education programs that can support the harmonious growth and development of gifted education participants and students with potential talents should be continuously developed, and their effects should be studied.
Because this study is the findings from applying the program only to the experimental group with the few number of gifted students, there is a limitation for generalization.
