로이 토비아스(Roy Tobias)의 신고전주의 작품에 관한 연구 : 서울 발레시어터 신고전주의 작품을 중심으로 = Study on the Neoclassicism Work of Roy Tobias

국문 초록 (Abstract)

로이 토비아스(Roy Tobias)의 생애와 가치관, 예술성을 조사하고 작품분석과 인터뷰를 통해 안무에 나타난 신고전주의 성향을 고찰 하였다. 또한 그의 활동무대였던 한국발레사와 서울 발레시어터의 예술고문으로 활동 했던 시기에 중점을 두어 연구한 결과 혁신적인 업적을 남진 인물임을 확인 할 수 있었다.
신고전주의는 현대무용이 성장하는 시기에 있어서 새로운 방향을 제시하여준 현대적인 발레의 출발점으로 매우 중요한 것이다. 로이 토비아스에게 지대한 영향력을 준 조지 발란신은 신고전주의 발레의 창시자이며, 그로 인해 로이 토비아스가 신고전주의 발레의 수호자임을 입증할 수 있었다. 그가 남긴 작품으로 신고전주의 작품 성향을 살펴보면 다음과 같다.
첫째, 무용에 대해 몸이 중심이고, 그 몸에서 어떤 감정과 드라마가 자연적으로 나올 수 있다고 생각하였다. 무용동작이 갖는 순수한 움직임의 표현, 또 움직임에 함축되어 있는 표현 가능성을 주목하여, 무용수의 잘 다듬어진 동작과 정확한 마임, 구사력으로 인해 무용수의 역할이 비중, 확대 되었다.
둘째, 무용과 가장 밀접한 음악을, 표현하는 수단으로 만들었다. 줄거리의 부재로 인해 발레의 극적인 동기는 음악으로 대치되었으며 음악의 형태, 스타일, 리듬, 음조, 음색이 무용에 반영된다. 음악과 그것의 해석은 무용이 주는 순수한 움직임만을 음악과 함께 느낄 수 있게 된다. 신고전주의 발레는 음악의 중요성을 가장 강조시키는 경향중의 하나이다.
셋째, 점점 단순화, 간소화되었고, 결국 연습복과 크게 다르지 않는 의상이 만들어 졌다. 무대장치 면에서도 화려한 장식적인 수단을 피하였고, 결과적으로 이러한 표현은 현대인의 단순하고 편리함만을 강조하는 이미지와 흡사하다.
넷째, 현대적인 스텝과 동작들을 더했다. 발을 안쪽으로 돌리도록 만들었고, 펼 수 도 있지만 구부릴 수가 있으며, 우아하거나 아니면 뒤틀리기도 한다. 이전에 발레에서 찾아볼 수 없던 동작의 범위를 과감하게 개척하는 동시에 21세기의 감각 즉 현대에 맞게 작품을 만들어 냈다.
이러한 로이 토비아스 신고전주의 특징을 오늘날 미래지행적인 예술현태인 실험주의 작품들이 가지고 있는 이해의 한계점을 극복해 줌으로써 근대에서 현대로 이어지는 무용사의 흐름을 매끄럽게 이어주는 중추적인 역할을 하였다.
통상적인 의미의 신고전주의의 개념은 새로운 공간창출이고 언어의 영역확장으로 새로운 의미의 고전주의로 거듭나면서 대중에게 가까이 접근하기 위한 무용예술에 순수 정신의 강조를 이끌어 내면서 발레역사에 그 가치를 부여하였다.
고인이 된 로이 토비아스는 이제 우리 곁에 없지만 그간 이룬 업적과 남긴 작품들, 아직 무용계에서 살아 숨 쉬는 거장들의 증언과 가르침으로 한국 무용계에 커다란 공현을 한 바는 틀림이 없다.
발레의 본 고장인 유럽의 무대에서도 동양인이 풍기는 매력과 잠재적인 능력을 보면서 새롭게 다가가는 동양의 예술성에 초점을 모았으며 한국발레의 결과물로 한국 문화 속에 서양 예술을 정착시켰고, 무용수뿐만 아니라 안무가, 연출가, 새로운 것을 시도하는 그 무엇에게 발판이 되어줄 중요한 지침으로서 충분이 가치가 있다고 본다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study addresses the neoclassicism in choreography of Roy Tobias through analysing his works and interviewing with dance masters worked with him based on researching his life, value, and art. Resulting from a research of Korean ballet history, specially focused on the era of Seoul Ballet Theatre as an art advisor, he absolutely had taken an innovative achievement.
Neoclassicism leading the development of modern dance is very important as a starting point of modern ballet. Roy Tobias, considerably influenced by George Balanchine who was a progenitor of neoclassicism ballet, can be named as a spokesman of neoclassicism ballet.
The analysis of his neoclassicism works is as belows:
First, he thought that the key of dance is a human body through which any emotion and drama could be expressed naturally. Focusing on the pure body movement and its possibility to express the implied in the movement, the role of dancer such as sophisticated movement, exact mime, and expression became more important.
Second, the music was used as another media to express. Due to the absence of a plot, the dramatic motive of ballet was replaced by the music of which genre, style, rhythm, melody and tone were reflected in dance. The music and its explanation could be described by the pure movement of body. The neoclassicism ballet is one of the ism stressing the importance of music.
Third, the clothes for the stage became simple and plain and finally, was made similar to the training suit. The stage setting was also avoid a showy and decorated things. These trend was to reflect the modern life preferring simple and convenient things.
Forth, it was added modern step and movement. It made the ankle turn inside, body stretch or bend, and elegant or ugly. He had developed the movements could not be found before as well as made a modern works for 21 century.
The neoclassicism of Roy Tobias made us understand today's experimentalism art works as a futurism. Therefore, his works took a role to bridge between modern and contemporary dance history.
Re-identifying the general concept of neoclassicism through creating a new space and expanding the linguistic meaning, the neoclassicism made the dance art underline a pure art to access to the public, which took a meaningful mark on the history of ballet.
Even though having passed away, he has contributed considerably to Korean dance history though his works and the instruction of masters influenced by him. He took an attention on the oriental characteristics and potential even in Europe, a home of ballet, and focused on the oriental ballet as a new perspective. Also, through his work, he integrated western ballet into Korean culture-Korean ballet. His works is worth of a important guide as a foothold for a dancer, a choreographer, a producer and any other who try to challenge something new.
