This thesis is a study on four works from the graduation recital of Eunhye Cho, a graduate music composition student at Ewha Womans University. It is aimed to research and demonstrate the background, form, pitch structure, and development method of the following works: Cord for Flute Solo (2016), Cube for Clarinet and Piano (2016), Paradise for String Trio (2017/2018) and tata for 6 Players (2019). On October 22, 2019, these works were premiered at the Ewha Womans University College of Music Recital Hall.
Cord for Flute Solo is influenced by Density 21.5, a work for solo flute by Edgard Varèse (1883-1965). This piece cited motive of Varése and used his compositional method-intervalic composition. This work consists of five sections and expresses various musical effects through repetition and change of two intervallic combinations: the minor second and the augmented fourth. This is expanded via octave displacement, and includes different timbre by extended technique of flute.
Cube for Clarinet and Piano was inspired by Cubes, the basic form of a cuboid. The musical elements replaced the verbal and mathematical meanings contained in dice with musical elements, and based on these, the music revolve through same pitch, minor second, and the six chords. Six sides of the dice, which have the same shape but are different objects, are represented by musical tone changes using the clarinet's glissando, multi-phonics, smorzato, diverse vibrations and key clicks and piano’s pedaling techniques. The work consists of six sections.
Paradise for String Trio is composed by as a result of an individual experience and its influence of composer. The work is a musical expression of the three words "None," "Conjoining" and "Apnea“. The work consists of five parts. The work use three string instruments-violin, viola, cello for intending to cut off the diversity of sound. In this work, the timbre change is an important development, and this piece was formatted following theses timbre changes. The extreme contrast between the dynamics and musical figures generate various sound changes.
Tata for 6 Players is composed of appreciation from the two books the composer has read, Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche’s "The Human, All Too Human" and Kim Ae-ran's novel "The Outside is Summer." The work consists of four sections and uses musical gestures based on the theme. The repetitive figures on the piano and the changing patterns of the meter make the music tense. This work has sub themes- irritation, disappearance, and accumulation. Structure of this piece related on its sub themes. And meaningless lyrics was used in this work for concentration on sopranos voice.
In conclusion, through study of these works, this thesis demonstrates how ideas related to various experiences are expressed in music. By analyzing structures, harmonies and timbre of these four works, this thesis indicates that the composer choose various types of musical structures, timbre and diverse instrument techniques to express musically certain ideas. Especially focusing on music timbre and each sound of instruments, the composer shows her own thoughts and feelings through these compositional techniques.
