A. The Purposes of Study
The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship of the self-image of teachers to their teaching effectiveness on the assumption that their self-image might affect teaching effectiveness, and it's additionally attempted to help improve their teaching effectiveness.
The research questions were set up as follows:
First, Do the personal background of teachers, including gender, position and career, and school background, including school size, make any differences to their perception of self-image?
Second, Do their personal background, including gender, position and career, and school background, including school size, make any differences to their awareness of their own teaching effectiveness?
Third, What impact does their self-image have on their teaching effectiveness?
B. The Methods of Study
To address the research questions, literature concerned was reviewed, and pilot study and survey were conducted. The subjects in this study were randomly selected 296 elementary school teachers from the city of Daejeon. For data analysis, SPSS Win 10.0 program was used, and statistical data on mean and standard deviation were obtained. Besides, t-test, F-test, Scheffe test, correlational analysis and multiple regression analysis were carried out.
C. The Conclusions and Suggestions of Study
The findings of the study were as follows:
First, the teachers investigated looked at their own image differently according to career. The teachers who had six-year or higher career viewed themselves as sort of artists more than the others with five-year or less career, and the reason seemed that the higher-experienced teachers had a deeper understanding of children, applied different teaching methods in light of problem situations and improved in expressiveness in the course of spending lots of time with students.
Second, their career made a difference to their teaching effectiveness. The teachers who had six-year or higher career acquired more instructional knowhow and had a better insight over time than the others with five-year or less career. Therefore, teachers should exactly grasp what students think of to provide better education, and put their energy into coming up with new teaching method.
Third, seeing themselves as artists, clinical doctors or researchers had a more favorable impact on teaching effectiveness. Specifically, the artist image had a greater impact on structural instruction, instructional development, providing learning motivation and offering learning opportunities than the clinical doctor and researcher images. The researcher image exercised an influence on creating and maintaining a good learning atmosphere. An instruction is like a performance. As performers present different tone colors, teachers should be able to Leach in different ways. To raise teaching effectiveness, teachers who are in charge of younger students should view themselves as artists to let children concentrate their attention on studies and have them find instruction more interesting.
Fourth, more extensive research efforts should be put into examining students, parents and experts to acquire more objective information on how the self-image of teachers is linked to their teaching effectiveness.
