This study reexamines the distinctive structure of Leonora Carrington's
art within Surrealism by analvzing the processes through which recurring
motifs and symbols in her work are transformed. with particular reference
to alchemical theory. Focusing on the period between 1937 and 1945-a
phase marked by profound biographical rupture and psychological re-
configuration, including war, the imprisonment of her lover, in-stitutionalization, escape from Europe, and exile--this research conducts aparallel analysis of Carrington's paintings and literary texts produced dur-ing these years.
Rather than reducing recurring motifs--such as horses, hyenas, houses
and interiors. kitchens and dining tables, forests and gardens. doors and
thresholds. light and color-to fixed symbolic meanings, this study em-
phasizes the functions these motifs perform within changing spatial con-
figurations and psychological states. Through a comparative examination
of visual and literary works, the analysis traces how motifs are posi-tioned within specific environments, relational structures between figures.
and chromatic and compositional tensions. according to different phases
of psvchological transformation.
The findings demonstrate that motifs in Carrington's work operate not as
static signifiers but as structural agents mediating specific psychological
conditions and transitional states. The alchemical stages of nigredo, albe-
do, and citrinitas are not employed as rigid classificatory categories, but
as process-oriented coordinates that illuminate the direction and charac-
ter of symbolic transformation. This approach reveals that Carrington's
early artistic production does not follow a linear narrative of develop-
ment: instead, it forms a non-linear structure in which phases of dis-
integration, purification, and partial centering overlap and recur.
Moreover, identical motifs acquire different emotional functions and sym-
bolic statuses depending on the period of production and biographical
context. Rather than reiterating stable meanings, they enact processes of
psychological transformation. Painting and literature, in this regard, do not
function in a hierarchical or illustrative relationship: instead, they con-
stitute parallel systems that record the same psycho-alchemical structure
of transformation through distinct medial languages.
Through this analysis, the present study repositions Leonora Carrington's
art not as a peripheral case within Surrealism or as a coffection of idio-
syncratic symbols, but as a coherent structural field organized around
processes of symbolic transformation. By examining how subject for-
mation and psychological change are articulated through a specific aes-
thetic grammar in women's Surrealist art, this research offers a new per-
spective on both Surrealist studies and methodologies of symbolic
analysis.
